Education and Aviation Partnership at Manchester Airport Celebrated for Creating Nearly 2000 Career Opportunities

(NEWS) MANCHESTER, UK, 2026-May-11 — /Travel PR News/ — Efforts to address workforce shortages in the aviation sector are increasingly relying on closer collaboration between airports, employers, and education providers, and a long-running partnership connected to Manchester Airport has now received national recognition for its approach.

Trafford & Stockport College Group and Manchester Airports Group were recently awarded the Business Engagement Award at the Educate North Awards, recognising the impact of the Manchester Airport Skills Hub initiative on regional employment and aviation workforce development.

According to a press release published by the airport, the award acknowledged the partnership’s employer-led model, which combines training, recruitment support, and workforce planning aligned directly with operational demand across Manchester Airport and its wider aviation ecosystem.

The collaboration has developed over more than a decade and has evolved from the earlier Airport Academy initiative into what is now the Manchester Airport Skills Hub, formally launched in 2025. Since the programme began in 2012, nearly 2,000 learners have moved into paid employment through the scheme, with many securing jobs shortly after completing training.

The initiative focuses on creating direct pathways into aviation-related careers, linking local residents with opportunities across airport operations, engineering, customer service, and management roles. Manchester Airport’s operational footprint currently supports more than 20,000 jobs, making workforce planning a significant priority as passenger demand and airport infrastructure projects continue to expand.

The timing is particularly relevant for the airport operator, which is nearing completion of a decade-long GBP 1.3 billion transformation programme at Terminal 2 while also moving forward with further investment plans for Terminal 3. These projects are expected to generate additional employment demand across multiple operational and technical areas.

The Skills Hub model combines education providers, employers, and civic stakeholders in an effort to respond more quickly to labour market changes. Key initiatives delivered through the partnership include engineering pathways, leadership and management programmes, careers engagement activities, and employer-supported recruitment schemes.

One of the programme’s distinguishing features is its CEO-led Skills Advisory Board, which uses live labour market data and employer input to help shape training priorities and future workforce planning. The approach reflects a broader trend within aviation and tourism industries, where employers are increasingly seeking more adaptable and demand-driven training systems.

Industry workforce shortages remain a challenge across many areas of travel and aviation, particularly following post-pandemic recovery and ongoing expansion projects at major transport hubs. Partnerships such as the Manchester Airport Skills Hub are being viewed as one way to strengthen long-term recruitment pipelines while also improving access to employment opportunities within surrounding communities.

The judges at the Educate North Awards highlighted the programme’s measurable employment outcomes, employer collaboration, and contribution to inclusive economic growth across Greater Manchester.

For both Trafford & Stockport College Group and Manchester Airports Group, the recognition also reinforces the growing role of regional partnerships in supporting the wider travel economy — not only through infrastructure investment and passenger growth, but through workforce development designed to sustain long-term operational resilience.
