(NEWS) BRUSSELS, Belgium, 2026-May-26 — /Travel PR News/ — Airports are often associated with terminals, runways, and international travel routes, but increasingly they are also becoming active players in the communities that surround them.
Across Europe, major airports are facing growing expectations to balance economic growth with environmental responsibility and local community engagement. From noise management and sustainability programmes to green infrastructure and neighbourhood investment, aviation operators are under increasing pressure to demonstrate tangible benefits for nearby residents.
In Belgium, Brussels Airport is continuing one of its local sustainability initiatives with the launch of a new funding round through the Brussels Airport Fund, a community programme managed in partnership with the King Baudouin Foundation.
According to a press release published by Brussels Airport, local associations, schools, youth organisations, neighbourhood groups, and sports clubs can apply for financial support of up to €10,000 for projects focused on sustainability, social cohesion, nature, green mobility, circularity, and energy-related initiatives.
The programme, now entering its fourth year, reflects a wider trend among European airports toward investing in community-based environmental and social projects alongside broader sustainability strategies.
Since the fund was established in 2023, Brussels Airport has contributed a total of €362,000 toward 42 local initiatives across communities surrounding the airport. Rather than focusing on large-scale infrastructure, many of the supported projects centre on practical improvements to public spaces, accessibility, inclusion, and environmental quality at neighbourhood level.
Among the previously funded initiatives is an inclusive care garden developed by the non-profit organisation Nido in Haren. Funding from the Brussels Airport Fund helped the organisation create outdoor spaces where people with disabilities can participate in gardening workshops, social activities, and relaxation programmes. The project also includes a terrace and communal meeting area designed to strengthen interaction between local residents and young people.
Another supported initiative transformed the Borrekensveld neighbourhood park in Grimbergen into a redesigned green recreational area for residents of all ages. The redevelopment focused on creating more sustainable public green space within the local community.
The airport says projects eligible for the latest funding round should demonstrate a positive contribution to both people and the local environment. Applications tied solely to the routine operating costs of organisations are not eligible.
The increasing emphasis on local environmental investment reflects a broader shift taking place across the aviation sector. As airports continue expanding sustainability targets around emissions, energy use, and operational efficiency, many are also investing more directly in the social and ecological wellbeing of neighbouring communities.
Community funds linked to airports have become more common in Europe, particularly around large hubs where nearby municipalities often experience both the economic benefits and environmental pressures associated with aviation activity.
For Brussels Airport, the initiative forms part of wider sustainability efforts as the airport continues balancing long-term growth with environmental responsibilities and community relations in the Flemish Brabant region surrounding the airport.
Applications for the 2027 funding cycle remain open until September 16, after which an independent jury organised through the King Baudouin Foundation will evaluate submissions before announcing selected projects in early 2027.
