Hong Kong International Airport Highlights Role of Detection Dogs in Aviation Security

(NEWS) HONG KONG, 2026-Jun-12 — /Travel PR News/ — Detection dogs play a visible but highly specialised role in modern airport security, helping authorities identify potential threats while operating across complex passenger environments. At Hong Kong International Airport, that role has become part of a wider inter-departmental security effort involving aviation security, police, customs and government agencies.

According to a press release published by HKIA, Aviation Security Company Limited marked the fifth anniversary of its Canine Unit with a ceremony highlighting the unit’s development since 2021 and its collaboration with the Hong Kong Police Force, Customs and Excise Department, Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department and Airport Authority Hong Kong.

The anniversary event included a joint demonstration by working dogs from different departments, showing how canine teams contribute to aviation security, patrol operations and inter-agency response capabilities across the airport environment.

The AVSECO Canine Unit currently has 20 professional detection dogs responsible for patrol duties in non-restricted areas of Hong Kong International Airport. Their work focuses on detecting explosives, firearms and ammunition, while also serving a public-facing role as approachable airport ambassadors for travellers.

The ceremony was officiated by senior aviation, airport, police, customs and government representatives, including Fred Lam of Airport Authority Hong Kong, AVSECO Chairman Lo Wai-kwok, AAHK Chief Executive Officer Vivian Cheung, Commissioner of Police Joe Chow, Commissioner of Customs and Excise Chan Tsz-tat and Director-General of Civil Aviation Victor Liu.

The anniversary comes as Hong Kong International Airport continues to expand its capacity with the commissioning of the Three-runway System and Terminal 2. As passenger traffic grows, the canine unit is expected to remain part of the airport’s broader security framework, supporting HKIA’s position as one of Asia’s major international aviation hubs.
