Derry named as one of the top cities in the world for 2013

2012-10-23 — /travelprnews.com/ — One of the best cities to visit in the world next year is Derry/Londonderry. This is according to Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2013, the highly anticipated eighth annual collection of the best places to go and things to do around the world for the year ahead, from the world’s most successful travel content provider.

The book states, ‘Derry/Londonderry is the UK City of Culture 2013, which means this vibrant historic walled city is undergoing a renaissance.’ Derry was placed as the fourth best city to visit next year by a panel of travel experts, behind San Francisco, Amsterdam and Hyderabad. Derry’s selection was based on its 2013 calendar of cultural events, as the city celebrates the 400th anniversary of its city walls and hosts the prestigious Turner Prize. The book also credits the city’s impressive redevelopment as a reason to consider a visit.

Lonely Planet’s Tom Hall contributed to the book, and says ‘Best in Travel is all about identifying destinations which offer the traveller something special. Derry is a brilliant example of a city that has bounced back from difficult times. This is a city with heart, which shines through in its exciting arts and music scene.’

Best in Travel 2013 highlights the top ten countries, top ten regions and top ten cities to visit in the year ahead. The destinations are selected because they are up and coming, have something special happening next year or simply because there’s a real buzz about the place. The book also contains 15 other inspirational travel lists, which include the best value destinations for the year ahead, the best destinations to get fit and the best places to try something new.

Other European destinations featured in the book include Swedish city Gothenburg as one of the best value destinations and Montenegro as one of the top countries for 2013. Tom explains that ‘despite the economic crisis, European destinations still pack a real punch on the global tourist scale and our selections in Best in Travel 2013 reflect this.’

Sri Lanka is tipped as the hottest country to visit in 2013 for both its good value and gourmet cuisine, whilst ‘epic beauty’ Corsica is the top region to visit.

Best in Travel 2013 is a special edition of this annual title as Lonely Planet celebrates its 40 year anniversary. The foreword contains interviews with some of the world’s top travel publishers on what the last four decades of travel has meant to them.

Best in Travel 2013 is compiled by Lonely Planet’s team of in-house experts, authors, guidebook commissioning team and selected members of our travel community. The listings are ranked in order by a panel of travel experts.

Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2013 is priced at £9.99 and will be available in stores from Tuesday 23rd October . Also available in a beautiful full-colour digital edition, from the iBookstore for £6.99.
