Charlotte Douglas International Airport Unveils North End Around Taxiway, Boosting Capacity and Safety

(IN SHORT) Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) has officially commissioned the North End Around Taxiway, improving safety, efficiency, and airfield capacity. The $253 million project reduces aircraft crossings on the busy Runway 18C-36C, enabling better traffic management and more efficient operations. As part of ongoing expansion efforts, the airport continues work on its fourth parallel runway, expected to open in 2027, further increasing capacity to meet growing demand.

(PRESS RELEASE) CHARLOTTE, NC, 2025-Jan-22 — /Travel PR News/ — Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) has officially launched its North End Around Taxiway, a key infrastructure development aimed at enhancing both safety and operational capacity. This new addition connects the west runway with the terminal ramp, improving traffic flow and reducing aircraft crossings on the busy Runway 18C-36C, which is vital for maintaining the airport’s efficiency.

“This milestone represents a significant step forward in our ongoing efforts to improve the safety, efficiency, and capacity of our airfield,” said Jack Christine, Chief Infrastructure Officer at CLT. “By optimizing traffic flow and reducing runway crossings, this project is directly aligned with our growing operational needs and helps us maintain the highest standards of service.”

Part of a broader expansion and modernization initiative, the taxiway reduces congestion and improves safety on the airfield, enabling smoother operations. The addition also creates extra queuing space for incoming flights, allowing for better management of air traffic, especially during peak times.

The $253 million project, which began construction in April 2021, included several key initiatives such as the relocation of the Airport Overlook, the rerouting of a section of Old Dowd Road, the permanent closure of Marshall Drive, and the construction of a new access road adjacent to the Long Term 1 parking lot. These modifications have been crucial to the successful completion of the taxiway and the overall efficiency of the airport’s infrastructure.

The funding for the project came from a combination of Passenger Facility Charge revenues and federal grants, underscoring the continued commitment to maintaining and enhancing airport infrastructure.

Construction also continues on CLT’s fourth parallel runway, a $1 billion project expected to be completed in 2027. Current work includes the installation of drainage pipes and utilities, with grading set to continue through mid-2026. Once complete, the new runway will further increase the airport’s capacity and contribute to its ongoing expansion to accommodate the increasing number of passengers and flights.
