Boeing Joins Forces with Norsk e-Fuel to Accelerate Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production in the Nordics

  • Strategic partnership will foster supply of sustainable aviation fuel in the Nordics to help meet global demand
  • Boeing investment will support development of one of Europe’s first industrial-scale Power-to-Liquids facility

(IN SHORT) Boeing has partnered with Norsk e-Fuel to support the development of one of Europe’s first industrial-scale Power-to-Liquids facilities for the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This collaboration aims to reduce aviation’s carbon emissions by increasing the availability of e-SAF, a fuel that can lower emissions by over 90% compared to conventional jet fuel. The strategic partnership is critical to achieving global SAF production targets and advancing the aviation industry’s transition to net-zero emissions.

(PRESS RELEASE) Oslo, Norway, 2025-Jan-22 — /Travel PR News/ — Boeing has joined forces with Norsk e-Fuel to accelerate the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the Nordics, marking a major milestone in the effort to reduce the aviation industry’s carbon emissions. The strategic partnership, announced on January 21, 2025, will focus on the development of one of Europe’s first industrial-scale Power-to-Liquids (PtL) facilities, which is expected to play a critical role in meeting global SAF demand.

Norsk e-Fuel’s PtL technology produces a new type of jet fuel known as electro-SAF, or e-SAF. The process uses fossil-free power to create green hydrogen, which is then combined with recycled CO₂ from biogenic sources to produce a sustainable fuel. This innovative fuel can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by more than 90% compared to conventional jet fuel.

Steve Gillard, Boeing’s regional sustainability director for Europe, Middle East, Turkey, Africa, and Central Asia, emphasized the importance of the collaboration, saying, “Our partnership with Norsk e-Fuel highlights the critical need for fossil-free energy in SAF production. This partnership will help boost SAF commercialization in the Nordics and globally, ensuring better accessibility for our customers as we work towards reducing aviation emissions by 2050.”

Currently, SAF represents only 0.53% of global commercial fuel use, but European efforts, such as the RefuelEU SAF initiative, aim to increase that share. By 2030, the initiative intends to achieve a 6% SAF share, targeting 70% by 2050. Norsk e-Fuel’s e-SAF is a key part of these goals, with a target of 1.2% in 2030, increasing to 35% by 2050.

Boeing’s investment in Norsk e-Fuel will help meet these ambitious SAF production targets and support national energy security across the Nordics. The partnership also aims to create policies that will make SAF production economically viable, ensuring the aviation industry remains competitive in the long term.

Lars Bjørn Larsen, CCO of Norsk e-Fuel, spoke about the broader impact of the partnership: “Our mission is to make e-fuels competitive with fossil fuels and ensure SAF is accessible and affordable. Boeing’s investment accelerates our efforts and supports the aviation industry’s transition to net-zero emissions.”

Norsk e-Fuel’s collaboration with Boeing, alongside its strong network of partners, including Norwegian Air, represents a powerful force in the aviation industry’s shift to sustainable energy. Geir Karlsen, CEO of Norwegian, added, “Boeing’s investment is a key milestone for Norsk e-Fuel and the broader development of the e-fuels industry. We’re excited to work with Boeing and leverage their expertise as we drive the future of sustainable aviation.”

This partnership combines Boeing’s extensive expertise in fuels and the aviation industry with Norsk e-Fuel’s innovative technology and strong industry partnerships, setting the stage for the next generation of sustainable aviation solutions.
