Japan Airlines Meets Environmental Targets Through Company-Wide Plastic Reduction Efforts

(NEWS) TOKYO, Japan, 2026-Jun-5 — /Travel PR News/ — As airlines face increasing pressure to reduce their environmental footprint, attention is turning not only to aircraft emissions but also to the everyday materials used throughout airline operations. Single-use plastics, in particular, have become a growing focus across the aviation industry as carriers seek to reduce waste and support broader sustainability goals.

Japan Airlines (JAL) has announced that it has achieved its fiscal year 2025 targets for reducing single-use plastics, completing the elimination of new petroleum-based plastics from customer-facing items in cabins and airport lounges while also transitioning cargo and airport operations to environmentally friendly materials.

The achievement forms part of the airline’s broader Green Transformation (GX) strategy and supports the JAL Group’s long-term commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The airline had established specific reduction targets covering all JAL-branded single-use plastic items provided to customers.

According to a press announcement published by JAL, the company adopted a “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Redesign” approach when reviewing onboard and airport products. The first step involved assessing whether certain items were necessary at all. Where elimination was not practical due to hygiene, safety or service requirements, products were redesigned to be reusable or manufactured using alternative materials such as biomass-based products, recycled plastics and certified paper.

The airline reported that all customer-facing operations in cabins and lounges have now eliminated the use of newly produced petroleum-based plastics. At the same time, cargo and airport operations have completed their transition to alternative materials that either reduce or eliminate reliance on virgin petroleum-based plastics.

Beyond plastics, JAL is also pursuing broader resource-efficiency initiatives. These include efforts to recycle inflight waste, reduce food waste and support circular economy principles across its operations.

The announcement coincides with World Environment Day on June 5 and reflects a wider trend across the airline industry, where sustainability programmes are increasingly extending beyond fuel efficiency and carbon reduction to include waste management, resource conservation and responsible sourcing.

For JAL, the achievement marks the completion of one of the key environmental targets outlined in its medium-term management plan, while providing a foundation for future sustainability initiatives as the airline continues working toward its longer-term environmental objectives.
