Brussels Airport and Montea invest in Brucargo

2012-09-18 — /travelprnews.com/ — As part of the development of Brucargo West, The Brussels Airport Company reached a cooperation agreement with the Belgian real estate developer Montea for the Construction of a third air cargo building on the site. A first 30,000m² building was delivered in 2008 and is used among others by bpost and a number of specialised logistics companies. A second building is currently under Construction at Brucargo West with a surface area of 23,000 m². This building is to accommodate the logistics activities of DHL Global Forwarding.

The new agreement with Montea includes the construction of the third building at Brucargo West, which allows Brussels Airport to address itself directly to companies that intend to use the airport as the operating base for their logistics activities. One of the major players in the pharmaceutical industry has already signed a contract to establish itself in the building. . Since a few years, Brussels Airport is focusing on becoming a major centre for the air transport of pharmaceuticals and high-end medical products.  It is one of the airport’s strategic objectives to provide more and better support to the many manufacturers of pharmaceuticals and high-end medical products on the Belgian market. This does not only guarantee employment at the airport itself, but also in the pharmaceuticals industry in all regions of the country. For the first time, a pharmaceutical company chooses to set up its logistics activity at the airport itself.

The central situation of Brussels Airport, the accessibility of Brucargo, the extended network of destinations and the possibility to dispose of an infrastructure that is completely tailored to its needs, all contributed to the company’s decision to establish itself at Brucargo. The new building will be constructed on a 31,000 m² plot of land, 17,000m² of which will be used to accommodate specialised warehousing and handling facilities as well as office space.

Arnaud Feist, CEO of The Brussels Airport Company points out that this step is proof of the important evolution in the way Brucargo is operating. “The fact that a major pharmaceuticals manufacturer establishes its logistics activity at our airport is a reward for Brussels Airport’s commitment to specialize in cargo products tailored to the needs of its users. The pharmaceutical industry is one of the major industries in our country and it is our goal to have its logistics chain pass through our airport. It is essential to our economy that we are not only capable of taking this task upon ourselves, but also of doing a better job than other airport specialized in this trade. Apart from investments in infrastructure, we are also working on improving the cold chain processes at our cargo airport”.
