BA film event ‘Silent Picturehouse’ marks its launch with the compilation of the ‘Top 100 Films that Inspire Travel’

2013-06-25 — /travelprnews.com/ — British Airways has compiled its ‘Top 100 Films that Inspire Travel’, to mark the launch of its pop up film event – Silent Picturehouse. It includes titles nominated by stars including Gwyneth Paltrow, Orlando Bloom, Professor Brian Cox and Colin Firth.

Silent Picturehouse will show travel inspired films in the evening, and children’s movies by day, using Sennheiser headsets to bring the in-flight experience to life. Held in London (22-26 July), tickets go on sale today (24 June), starting from £7.50 at ba.com/silentpicturehouse.

In a recent survey of 2,000 people, British Airways found that nearly 40 per cent of us have been influenced to travel by a film. Adventure drama ‘The Beach’ was named the most inspiring movie overall, men nominated ‘The Hangover’ as their number one choice, and the over 45s voted for romantic comedy ‘Shirley Valentine’.

The Top 100 list includes a number of titles that inspired celebrities, and those in the industry to travel, as the following exclusive quotes reveal…

“Whenever I see ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’, a total comedy classic, I get the urge to feel the breeze of the south of France in the summer!” Actress Gwyneth Paltrow

“I cherished my time filming ‘Lord of the Rings’ in New Zealand – it’s the most beautiful, magical place with great hospitality. I love places that are completely cut off from everything – where I can relax and enjoy the simplicity of nature.”Actor Orlando Bloom

“’La Dolce Vita’ made we want to go to Rome and, if not jump into the Trevi Fountain, at least watch someone else do it. Maybe that’s why I married an Italian…!” Actor Colin Firth

“It would have to be ‘Casino Royale’. I love the dramatic landscapes of the Czech Republic, which Martin Campbell cleverly disguised as Montenegro. They are so mysterious and different to anything else I see on my regular travels and would love to go there some day.” US Open Champion and British Airways sponsored, Justin Rose

“’Into the Wild’ is a real journey of discovery. Since watching it I’ve done a few trips on my own and have always thought about it when I’m travelling. I love the adventure and the inspiration I take from it as well.” Silent Picturehouse Presenter and DJ Edith Bowman

“For me, Woody Allen’s ‘Manhattan’ defines New York. Both New York and Manhattan Island should be in black in white! I always hear the soundtrack of Gershwin in my head every time I go over the Queensboro Bridge, or come in from JFK because of it!” Professor Brian Cox

“Planes, Trains and Automobiles’ is maybe the funniest film ever, but it reminds you that the journey is just as important as the destination.” Actor and Presenter James Corden

“As kids we watched ‘The Goonies’ on repeat. It was undoubtedly the film that made me want to live life full of adventure and travel. I was raised in Guernsey and always wished for a pirate ship to sail past, but knew that to experience true adventure, I needed to get off my little island.” Presenter Dawn O’Porter

“‘The Hobbit’ has definitely inspired me to go and visit New Zealand. I literally want to check out all of the parts of the film, go and visit the Shire and see it all in real life.” Olympic medallist Louis Smith

“I know that ‘Up’ is an animated film, and an aircraft is far more practical as a form of travel, but this really is unconventional travel at its finest. I love the underlining message of having that goal of going somewhere you always wanted to go despite the challenges. And that a dream should never be given up on, and it inspired me to tick places off my dream destination list!” Presenter Laura Whitmore

“Travel is best when it’s as unplanned as possible so that you get that real sense of adventure. The film ‘Thelma and Louise’ really encapsulates that – their travels are unplanned and spontaneous and therefore full of excitement, escapism and optimism.” Actor Douglas Booth

“’The Sound of Music’ is one of my mother’s favourite films, and we watched it constantly while growing up. The opening credits transport you through these incredible crane shots flying through the Alps and over Salzburg before Julie bursts into ‘The Hills Are Alive’. Any chance to travel in the direction of one and I’m there.” Actress Kara Tointon

“Watching ‘Y Tu Mama Tambien’ transported me from Wales to a much more exotic and sunny place than I was used to! As a coming-of-age classic, it somehow symbolises travel as something you have to experience when you get that first opportunity of freedom and independence in your late teens.”Actor Craig Roberts

“For me, ‘Jaws’ is the greatest film ever made and began my fascination with sharks. I love nothing more than travelling to coastlines across the world, standing on a beach and wondering how close I am to the nearest shark. But standing on the beach is where my journey ends, I’ve not been in the sea since I saw the film, when I was five!” Presenter Alex Zane

“’Tampopo’ is a deeply odd film about Japan, ramen noodles, love and sex. It made me very hungry and desperate to travel to Japan. It started my love affair with this amazing country, its culture, its food, its cinema and made me buy my first ticket to the land of the rising sun.” Musician Jamie Cullum

“One of my favourite films is ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’. Released in the year I was born, it is an exotic and glamorous snapshot of that time. I love the views and the feel of the city the film gives us, from the Brownstones on the East Side, the splendour of Fifth Avenue to the truly unique and stunning Central Park. When I first visited in the 1980s the city didn’t disappoint, and I still get that same excitement when I arrive in New York today.” Chief Executive of BAFTA, Amanda Berry

“The scenery of Southern France in ‘A Good Year’ is stunning and the charm and its laid back lifestyle are enticing.” England Rugby Captain, Chris Robshaw

“As a kid, so many films made me want to travel… the New York of ‘Ghostbusters’, the Shanghai that ‘Indiana Jones’ swung a few punches in. However, if I had to name one film that inspires travel, it would have to be ‘E.T.’ – especially if I could do it by flying BMX as he did…!” Writer Danny Wallace

“When ‘The Beach’ came out I had already been toying with the idea of visiting Thailand, but after watching the film I booked a four- week trip and traveled the islands. It was a phenomenal experience and even more beautiful in person than on the big screen” Presenter Emma Willis

“‘The Piano’ is a romantic drama that really made me want to see New Zealand. When I finally did it was every bit as jaw dropping as it looked in the film. It’s so virgin and green, it’s like God said ‘lets try again’ and he got it right this time!”Comedienne Ruby Wax
