Toronto, 2017-Aug-01 — /Travel PR News/ — The Greater Toronto Airports Authority has officially launched a new Noise Monitoring Terminal (NMT) in Oakville, providing residents with additional means to monitor noise generated from airport operations. The NMT, located in Glenashton Park, is the first of eight planned for installation in the Greater Toronto Area.
“It’s important that Toronto Pearson is effectively measuring the noise environment in the communities impacted by the airport to help us to understand the impacts of our operations. Traffic levels and operations have changed since the last NMT Review; therefore, a review of the NMT locations was required to ensure we are accurately measuring and reporting current airport noise impacts,” said Cynthia Woods, Manager, Noise Office, Greater Toronto Airports Authority.
Glenashton Park was selected for the new NMT based on a number of factors considered by a Noise Monitoring Terminal working group, comprised of members of Toronto Pearson’s Community Environment & Noise Advisory Committee (CENAC). The factors considered included: annual traffic levels, the differential between background noise and aircraft noise, proximity to the flight path, and community response to noise.
“As the CENAC representative for Halton region, I’m pleased to see that the Noise Monitoring Terminal review has come full circle with the installation of the NMT in Oakville. It was important to ensure that the residents that I represent were considered during the NMT Review process given the impact of current flight paths on this area,” said Councillor Jeff Knoll, Oakville’s Ward 5 Regional and Town Councillor
A review of the NMTs and their locations began in 2015 as a part of the GTAA’s Five Year Noise Management Action Plan, developed with CENAC. The results of the review included recommendations for the installation of eight new NMTs in five communities in the GTA.
The new NMTs are joining 18 pre-existing monitors to help capture noise created by arriving aircraft. The existing 18 NMTs, which primarily capture noise generated by aircraft departures, will remain in place. Once live, the new NMTs will appear on WebTrak, an online tool that provides real-time flight and noise data.
In addition to Oakville, NMTs will be installed in Halton Hills, Vaughan, Mississauga, and Toronto. Each NMT is equipped with a microphone that collects aircraft noise and feeds it into the Airport Noise Operations Management System (ANOMS) and WebTrak.
