Street Closure Notice: Parade of Planes

What:
More than 80 airplanes will taxi down the streets of Palm Springs for a “Parade of Planes” starting from the Palm Springs International Airport to the Palm Springs Convention Center. The aircraft will be on display outside and inside the venue for the 2012 Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) Aviation Summit, one of the industry’s largest aviation tradeshow and conventions, scheduled for October 11-13, 2012 at Palm Springs Convention Center.

When:  The street closure schedule is expected to be as follows:

On Wednesday, October 10th beginning at 4:00AM:
For staging of aircraft
North Orchid Tree Lane will be closed from Alejo Road South for 60 feet;
North Sunrise Way will be closed from Alejo Road South for 60 feet;
Cerritos Drive will be closed from Alejo Road South for 60 feet.
The streets will reopen at approximately 1:00pm

On Wednesday, October 10th beginning at 8:00AM:
Alejo Road will be closed from the Airport to Avenida Caballeros;
Avenida Caballeros will be closed from Alejo Road south to the driveway of Margarita’s Restaurant
Amado will be closed from Avenida Caballeros to Calle Alvarado;
Calle Alvarado will be closed from Amado South to East Andreas Road.
The parade is expected to begin at 10:00AM and last approximately 2 ½ hours.  The streets will reopen at approximately 1:00PM – only Alejo & Ave. Caballeros from Amado to Alejo will reopen. The 3 streets around PSCC will remain closed for the event duration.

On Saturday, October 13th beginning at 2:30PM planes will return to the Airport:
This return route is different from the one the planes will travel on Wednesday.
Amado Road will be closed from Avenida Caballeros to Sunrise Way;
Sunrise Way will be closed from Amado Road to Alejo Road
Alejo road will be closed from Sunrise Way to the airport.
The parade is expected to start at 3:00 pm and last approximately 2 ½ hours.  The streets will reopen at approximately 6PM.

During the AOPA convention, the planes will be parked on the streets around the Convention Center including Avenida Caballeros, Amado Road, and Alvarado Road, portions of which will be closed from Wednesday, October 10 at 8AM through Saturday, October 13 at 6PM.  Access to Margarita’s Restaurant and the Palm Springs Unified School District will be available by turning north onto Avenida Caballeros from Tahquitz Canyon Way. Additionally, Alvarado access will be available for Plaza Villa residents from Andreas

From Oct. 10-15, Kirk Douglas Way, just south of the Palm Springs International Airport, will be closed to all vehicle traffic to accommodate AOPA aircraft parking. Travelers should use the El Cielo entrance to access the Airport.
