St. John’s International Airport Authority Responds to an Aircraft Overrun on its Primary Runway

ST. JOHN’S, NL, 2012-08-14 — /travelprnews.com/ — At 4:20 p.m. today, an Ilyushin 76 arriving from Prestwick, Scotland overran the Airport’s primary runway (Runway 11/29). St. John’s International Airport Authority has activated its emergency plan and its well-trained and highly skilled emergency response team is responding to the incident along with St. John’s Regional Fire Department, Eastern Health, and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary. The aircraft was carrying nine (9) crew members and none require medical attention.

Both runways are presently closed to complete initial inspections and assessments. It is anticipated that the secondary runway will be open in approximately one-hour for regular operations. Updates will be provided as information becomes available.

Passengers are advised to check with their airlines on the status of their flight prior to coming to the Airport.
