SFO honored with Visit California Poppy Award for 2019 campaign in mainland China

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, 2020-Feb-18 — /Travel PR News/ — The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) was recognized for its public relations efforts by Visit California, a nonprofit organization promoting tourism in California. In their biennial Poppy Awards, the Airport was honored in the category of “Best Public Relations Campaign – Business” for a Lunar New Year Campaign that ran in mainland China last year.

“We are so proud to be honored by Visit California for our public relations efforts in China,” said Airport Director Ivar C. Satero. “By leveraging what makes SFO so special – including the Wag Brigade – our International Marketing and Aviation Development team delivered a unique way to connect with a key overseas market. We appreciate the recognition of our valued industry partner.”

“The Poppy Awards celebrate the best and brightest in California tourism promotion and inspire the industry to continue on a path of innovation and creativity,” said Caroline Beteta, President and CEO of Visit California. “This year’s finalists inspired travelers from around the world to live their biggest dreams in California.”

Since 2013, SFO has featured the Wag Brigade, which brings trained animals to the terminals to make passenger travel more enjoyable. The team includes LiLou, a Juliana-breed pig, who was the focus of the promotion to create excitement among travelers in mainland China to use SFO as their gateway airport. 2019 was the Year of the Pig in the Lunar calendar.

The Visit California Poppy Awards are a biennial contest that honors the best and brightest of California tourism promotion. Awards were presented during the 12th annual Visit California Outlook Forum held February 10-11 at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina and attended by nearly 800 tourism industry leaders.
