Los Angeles, California, 2012-09-06 — /travelprnews.com/ — Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) and the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) will present a series of three weekend site-specific dance and music performances by Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre, String Theory, and Sarah Elgart during the months of September and October at the LAX FlyAway® bus terminal in Van Nuys. The series is presented to enhance the experience of travelers and visitors and enrich the public space of the bus terminal by showcasing innovative performances that feature engaging dance, music, and imagery. All performances are free to the public and will take place at the LAX FlyAway® bus terminal, 7610 Woodley Avenue in Van Nuys. Parking is $4 in the parking structure or free street parking along Woodley Avenue.

September 7and 8, 8:30 p.m.
Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre, Kiss n’ Ride
Following star-crossed lovers to their unanticipated departure, the performance will draw upon the futuristic architecture of the bus terminal and bring a humanistic touch to the modern structure. As the performers explore the notion of leaving as a beginning and end, the audience will witness an intricate story of travelers against the backdrop of ongoing entrances and exits of real-life commuters. Through electric choreography directed by Heidi Duckler, LED-infused costumes designed by Kaycee Krieg, new video design by artist Ray Sun, and a cutting-edge live DJ, Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre will transform the LAX FlyAway® into a kiss-and-ride away from daily life.

String Theory, Compositions of Sound + Space
String Theory is a collaborative ensemble of musicians and dancers that uses giant invented instruments and sonic sculptures to transform environments and architecture into large-scale performance installations. At the LAX FlyAway®, String Theory will present a site-specific performance installation by transforming the bus terminal into a giant stringed harp instrument using their signature Curve Harp ignited by live music and dance. The ensemble was founded by instrument designer/builder and composer Luke Rothschild; choreographer/director Holly Rothschild; and cellist and composer Joseph Harvey.

Sarah Elgart, FlyAway Home
Choreographer/Director Sarah Elgart will present an encore of her 2011 performance, FlyAway Home, a reflective, ambient, and movement-based performance that travels through and responds to the scale and architecture of the LAX FlyAway® bus terminal. Large-scale video projections by Stephen Glassman, an ambient score by Feltlike, and costume design by Swinda Reichelt will enhance this celebratory experience of alternative transportation in Los Angeles. The work touches on themes of flight, light, gravity, and the idea that you take your home with you.
This year marks the second year of site-specific dance and music performances at the LAX FlyAway® made possible through the LAWA Art Program in partnership with the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. The goal of the Performing Arts Program at LAWA is to enhance the experience of travelers, visitors, and staff of the LAX FlyAway® by creating pedestrian-friendly amenities, vibrant public spaces, and accentuating the overall service-oriented mission of the LAX FlyAway® through the performing arts. Initiated in 1990, the purpose of the LAWA Art Program is to provide opportunities for educational, entertaining, and enriching cultural experiences for the traveling public at LAX and LA/Ontario International Airports and the LAX FlyAway® bus terminal. The program showcases local and regional artists through temporary exhibitions and permanent public art installations, which enhance and humanize the overall travel experience for millions every year. Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, Public Art Division
DCA significantly supports artists and cultural projects through four distinct types of arts programs within its Public Art Division, each committed to the creation and/or maintenance of art within the public realm: the Public Works Improvements Arts Program (PWIAP, more commonly known as Percent-for-Public-Art or Public % for Art), the Private Arts Development Fee Program (ADF), the Murals Program, and the City’s Art Collection. As part of the Division’s PWIAP and ADF Programs, DCA implements an independent peer panel and public review process to commission public artists and to approve the creation and/or presentation of site-specific public art projects throughout the City of LA. Through these programs, Division staff oversees a substantial portion of DCA’s programming budget; in FY10/11, through these two programs alone, DCA staff managed a portfolio totaling approximately $18.2 million.
