(PRESS RELEASE) MANCHESTER, UK, 2026-May-15 — /Travel PR News/ — Manchester Airport is celebrating a major milestone alongside Virgin Atlantic as the carrier marks 30 years of operations from its northern England base, highlighting three decades of long-haul connectivity between Manchester and destinations across North America and the Caribbean.

The anniversary commemorates the launch of Virgin Atlantic’s first Manchester route to Orlando on 17 May 1996, introduced under the leadership of Richard Branson. Since then, Manchester has remained a key hub within the airline’s UK network, supporting both leisure and business travel throughout Northern England.

To mark the occasion, Virgin Atlantic has introduced a new Airbus A330neo aircraft named “Champagne Supernova,” inspired by the famous Oasis track and the airline’s long-standing relationship with Manchester. The aircraft will carry the registration G-VMAN, referencing the airline’s connection to the city and region.

As part of the celebrations, the airline will host a customer activation event at Manchester Airport featuring themed giveaways, photo opportunities and commemorative experiences for travellers passing through the airport.

Over the last three decades, Virgin Atlantic has steadily expanded its Manchester network and now operates direct services to Orlando, Atlanta, New York, Las Vegas and Barbados. The Las Vegas route remains the only direct West Coast US connection available from Northern England. Customers also benefit from onward international connectivity through the airline’s partnership with Delta Air Lines and the wider SkyTeam alliance network.

The anniversary coincides with continued investment in Virgin Atlantic’s Manchester operation. The airline confirmed additional summer capacity on Manchester-Orlando services and plans to upgrade the route to larger Airbus A350-1000 aircraft for Winter 2026. Further capacity increases are also expected during Summer 2027 as the carrier continues expanding its northern England presence.

Dave Geer said Manchester has served as the airline’s “home in the North” for 30 years and remains central to its strategy of connecting customers across Northern England to the United States and beyond.

Stephen Turner highlighted the airport’s strong partnership with Virgin Atlantic and noted that Manchester Airport’s £1.3 billion redevelopment of Terminal 2 is helping prepare the airport for future growth and an enhanced passenger experience.

Looking ahead, Virgin Atlantic also announced a new partnership with The Executive Lounge, a premium lounge scheduled to open in July 2026 in Terminal 2. The facility will provide Upper Class passengers and Flying Club Gold members with an upgraded pre-flight experience as part of the airline’s expanding premium offering in Manchester.
