2012-09-06 — /travelprnews.com/ — To mark the 21st anniversary of Bóthar, the Irish based Charity that enables families and communities worldwide to overcome hunger and poverty and to restore the environment in a sustainable way, Shannon Airport is pleased to host Bóthar’s photographic exhibition GROW in the Airport’s Transit Lounge.
The exhibition is a stunning collection of photographs by award winning local photographer Sean Curtin, taken in Uganda last year when Sean accompanied Bóthar patron Neven Maguire to one of the international aid organisation’s key projects.
The images went on display recently and have received a very positive reaction from international passengers as they pass through the largest airport on the western seaboard.
Speaking at the launch of the exhibition, Bóthar CEO Dave Moloney said that Shannon Airport is the most apt of locations for such an exhibition, not least given the year that is in it. “It is only appropriate that in this ‘coming of age’ year for our organisation that we get to exhibit GROW at Shannon, as it was at this very airport that the first airlift of Irish dairy heifers departed for Uganda in 1991.
“We are deeply indebted to Shannon for the ongoing co-operation that we received over the years here and the hosting of this exhibition is another example of that. Since 1991 we have been transporting our dairy heifers, goats and pigs to the many struggling families in the developing world. Almost all of these airlifts have departed from Shannon”.
“We hope that as people travel through the airport, this exhibition will be a reminder to them of the daily struggle that life is for so many across the developing world, but also of the hope that Bóthar can bring to help them prosper and, indeed, GROW.”
Said Airport Director Mary Considine: “We are delighted to be able to host this exhibition. The images speak to the outstanding quality of Sean’s work as they really capture the sense of hope that Bóthar brings to people in the developing world. The exhibition is only on display a short time here and passengers are really engaged by it so that speaks for itself”.
“Shannon Airport has an association with Bóthar going back to Bóthar’s very origins. Given that the organisation was founded locally in the Mid-West, we are all the more proud to be able to support it in whatever way we can and look forward to doing so long into the future.”
The man responsible for the exhibition, Sean Curtin, said he was delighted that the images are being showcased locally. “GROW has already been exhibited in Dublin, but I was thrilled to hear that it was going to be hosted in Shannon Airport, where I have worked on many, many assignments over the years. There is a natural tie in with Shannon through Bóthar’s origins but I am also delighted that it’s here because well over 1.5million people pass through Shannon every year so an awful lot of people will see it.
“I hope, of course, that they enjoy the exhibition but also that they might be encouraged by it to support the organisation as it does amazing work for people who are challenged in a way that few of us could imagine.”
The exhibition will continue at Shannon until the Spring of 2013.
