Meliá Hotels International reaches a global agreement with the environmental management system EarthCheck

• In the past decade, the hotel company has recorded savings of €1.3 million in energy costs and 500 million litres of water thanks to the EarthCheck system

Palma de Mallorca, 2012-10-29 — /travelprnews.com/ — Meliá Hotels International, Spain’s leading hotel company, has extended its partnership with EarthCheck, one of the most important Sustainable Tourism certification programmes in the world, with the aim of further strengthening the application of sustainability principles in business operations.

In 2012, the hotel company will have four hotels with EarthCheck certification, joining the six other company hotels already certified and which have seen savings of €1.3 million in energy costs and nearly 500 million litres of water in the last decade.

For the Vice Chairman and CEO of Meliá Hotels International, Gabriel Escarrer, “EarthCheck is one of the leading management systems for responsible tourism and is a powerful platform to assist us in putting our sustainability vision into action.” For the chief executive, the alliance represents “a logical step forward after more than 10 years of collaboration after the Meliá Bali was first certified in 2001, and after the very positive results we have achieved.”

In fact, the Meliá Bali is one of EarthCheck’s star performers at reducing its water, energy and waste consumption and assisting the local community. In 2011, the hotel sourced 90% of its consumable goods from within Bali and employed only local contractors.

Stewart Moore, CEO of EC3 Global, stated that “Meliá is one of EarthCheck’s standout sustainability heroes in the Asian region. We are proud to extend our partnership globally and have more of their properties certified”. According to the CEO of this tourism and environmental management consultancy group, responsible for EarthCheck, “our aim is to provide Meliá hotels with quantifiable metrics to address their risks, deliver bottom line efficiencies, maximise guest experiences and minimise their environmental footprint”.

The EarthCheck certification programme operates across more than 70 countries and annually measures 16 billion kWh of energy, 34 billion litres of water, 1 million cubic metres of waste and 2.5 million tonnes of CO2. According to Moore, “we strive to reduce our members’ consumption levels and have identified over 0 million dollars in savings”.

Being an EarthCheck member means Meliá also benefits from accessing one of the world’s largest tourism research databases, the EarthCheck Research Institute (ERI). “ERI research shows that sustainability is no longer a choice, but rather a global movement that all tourism and travel industries must take seriously,” says Moore, “and emerging green economy presents a positive opportunity for the industry, especially for pro-active players like Meliá”.
