Makena Beach & Golf Resort Partners with Local Master Sommelier to host Lamb & Syrah Wine Tasting in December

Wailea, Makena – 2012-12-11 — /travelprnews.com/ — The Makena Beach & Golf Resort, with the help of Master Sommelier Patrick Okubo, explores the pairing of Lamb & Syrah on December 20, 2012 at the resort’s Molokini Bar & Grille. The event is part of the resort’s monthly Food & Wine Education Series.

Following the successful first and second food & wine education events, the Makena Beach & Golf Resort is proud to announce the third event of the series and the last Food & Wine Education Event for the 2012 year. It will focus on the pairing of Syrah & Lamb. Syrah or shiraz is a dark-skinned variety grape that produces a powerful red wine. This full bodied wine with its’ black berry and pepper notes compliment the Executive Chef’s herb infused lamb dishes. On the menu for the December event is braised lamb, lamb meatballs and lamb skewers paired with Guigal Cote du Rhone, Penley Hyland Shiraz and Arrowwood Syrah by Sonoma wines. The December tasting event will be held on Thursday December 20, 2012 from 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the resort’s Molokini Bar & Grille and is offered at only $40 per person, not including tax or gratuity.

The upcoming tasting event is part of the resort’s Food & Wine Education Series at Makena featuring a culinary event every month. This new culinary partnership between Master Sommelier, Patrick Okubo, and Makena Beach & Golf Resort Executive Chef, Marc McDowell, will focus on various wines paired with dishes made with fresh local ingredients. “With the success of the first two tasting event, we are very excited for the continuation of the series, says Food & Beverage Director Leo Mallari, “in addition to bringing great food & wine events to Makena, we hope the new series becomes an indicator of the great and new culinary adventures yet to come from Makena.” During each event Executive Chef Marc McDowell will provide demonstrations on the dishes being featured, while Master Sommelier, Patrick Okubo will be on hand to share his expertise on the wines chosen for each event.

About Makena Beach & Golf Resort’s Executive Chef Marc McDowell

Since his appointment as Makena Beach & Golf Resort’s Executive Chef in October 2010, Chef Marc McDowell has revolutionized the resort’s culinary program, with creative menu development, providing expert direction and training to the resort’s culinary team, and overseeing food production in the resort’s four restaurants and catering department. Trained at the prestigious Culinary Institute of America, Hyde Park, New York, Chef McDowell has a background in French cooking, specializing in a fusion of exotic herbs and spices with fresh Hawaiian ingredients to create new flavor profiles for the palette. His professional experience includes senior culinary positions at the Grand Wailea Resort, Maui and most recently as the Executive Sous Chef at the Ritz Carlton in Kapalua, Maui.

About Master Sommelier, Patrick Okubo

Patrick “Pat” Okubo is a Master Sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers, a Certified Wine Educator (CWE), and Certified Specialist of Spirits (CSS).  A graduate of University High and the University of Hawaii, he is a member of the National Guard, runs The Wine GI, a personal wine consultation and education business, and is host of A Perfect Sip – an online radio show, www.aperfectsip.com.  Pat is the Fine Wine Specialist and Wine Educator for Young’s Market Hawaii.   Previously, he opened Formaggio Grill as Managing Partner and Wine Director / Restaurant manager at Four Seasons Lana’i.  Pat is the third Master Sommelier in Hawaii and is the second youngest Master Sommelier in the nation.
