Los Angeles, California – 2012-09-24 — /travelprnews.com/ — Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), in partnership with the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, announces a new exhibition at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) featuring fiber artworks by 19 Southern California artists. Connecting Threads, curated by independent curator and artist Julie Kornblum, presents a range of contemporary fiber artworks made with natural and synthetic fibers. Through their individual artistic practices, the artists use fibers, such as yarn and thread, as the visual medium to create abstract compositions, fashion self-portraits, provide commentary on the human condition, and more. The exhibition is located in the display case on the Upper/Departures Level of Terminal 1 and is on view for ticketed passengers through January 2013.
Connecting Threads features fiber artworks that are both deeply rooted in the past and able to transcend common historical labels, such as “functional art” or “household crafts.” The artists demonstrate how basketry, stitching, and knotting can be applied as sculptural techniques, resulting in deconstructed vessels, while weaving, quilting, crochet, and felting are methods used to create two-dimensional works, such as tapestries that resemble paintings. Artists featured in this exhibition include Fern Tompkins Benson, Charlotte Bird, Ashley Blalock, Emily Dvorin, Polly Jacobs Giacchina, Jenne Giles, Julie Kornblum, Brecia Kralovic-Logan, Carol Lang, Michael F. Rhode, Leisa Rich, Cindy Rinne, Connie Rohman, Carmella Karijo Rother, Sandra Rude, Nadine Spier, Merna Strauch, Peggy Wiedemann, and Darlyn Susan Yee.
