Essential Travel survey finds Almost A Third of Gappers Underestimate How Much Money They’ll Need

2013-07-19 — /travelprnews.com/ — 28% of gappers cite money and financial worries as the biggest challenge during their time away, as the leading online travel insurance site Essential Travel found during a recent survey.

However, with 34% of those surveyed taking less than two weeks to plan their trip of a lifetime, this comes as little surprise. What is worrying is that with ABTA estimating that nearly one in four of Brits (24% ) are travelling abroad without insurance, Essential Travel is concerned that gappers may be tempted to cut costs by foregoing travel insurance and so put themselves at risk.

In an effort to prevent this, Essential Travel are reducing their Backpacker insurance by 15% until 1st September, 2013.

Essential Travel’s insurance expert Nina Montgomery cautions anyone on a gap year not to leave themselves vulnerable: “No one likes to think about what could go wrong, but a good travel insurance policy will cover you for things like cancellation and baggage as well as medical emergencies including costs like repatriation. If cash strapped gap year takers are deciding not to take out travel insurance this could be a costly mistake should something happen.”

Essential Travel has also created its Career Gap Campaign to help gappers plan their time away…and put together a realistic budget. It also includes step by step advice from leading money, CV, and gap year experts, as well as real life stories from people have done it – from volunteering to working as a ski rep, to teaching English in Japan.
