UK Aviation Accessibility Taskforce Launched to Improve Air Travel Experience for Disabled Passengers

(PRESS RELEASE) Aberdeen, UK, 2024-Nov-8 — /Travel PR News/ — AGS Airports has been invited by the UK Government to join the newly established Aviation Accessibility Task and Finish Group, designed to address the challenges faced by disabled passengers in air travel. Launched by UK Transport Secretary Louise Haigh and chaired by Paralympian Tanni, Baroness Grey-Thompson, this taskforce brings together industry leaders and disability advocates to improve standards, empower consumers, and remove barriers to accessibility in aviation.

The group includes representatives from airports, airlines, and consumer rights organizations. Paul Scott, Terminal Assurance Manager at Glasgow Airport, will represent AGS Airports, which operates Glasgow, Aberdeen, and Southampton Airports. Each of these airports has been recognized for their efforts in accessibility, with Glasgow and Southampton both achieving a “Very Good” rating in the Civil Aviation Authority’s (CAA) Airport Accessibility Report.

Key figures on the taskforce include Sophie Morgan, a disability advocate and co-founder of Rights on Flights, and other notable industry and consumer representatives. Together, the group will consult with passengers who have direct experience flying with disabilities, working to ensure that consumer needs are central to its recommendations.

Over the next nine months, the taskforce will explore practical solutions to persistent issues faced by disabled passengers, such as delays in assistance, wheelchair handling, service standards, and access to facilities and information. The group aims to develop actionable recommendations for the industry, government, and regulators to ensure meaningful improvements.

Transport Secretary Louise Haigh emphasized the importance of dignified travel for all passengers, pledging that this taskforce, led by experienced advocates, will help to drive lasting change. Baroness Grey-Thompson echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of protecting passenger rights throughout their journey.

Ronald Leitch, Chief Operating Officer at AGS Airports, underscored the group’s significance, noting AGS’s commitment to improving accessibility through continuous engagement, facility upgrades, staff training, and technology trials. He welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with the taskforce and advance service standards for passengers with reduced mobility.
