2012-10-8 — /travelprnews.com/ — The cream of South Africa’s entertainment industry will gather in Ekurhuleni this Saturday, 6 October 2012, to commemorate the second annual Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Liberation Walk, which takes place at the O.R. Tambo International Airport Sports Ground in Kempton Park.
Themed ‘Walk to Educate’, the Liberation Walk traces the footsteps of anti-apartheid struggle icons Oliver and Adelaide Tambo in Ekurhuleni, where they spent a great part of their lives, and is a celebration of their values of self-sacrifice and serving others. The Walk is a partnership between the Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Foundation, O.R. Tambo International Airport and the City of Ekurhuleni and forms part of celebrations during O.R. Tambo Month, as October has become known.
Among the big acts scheduled to perform at this year’s event are award-winning, top selling kwaito group Biz Nuz, eclectic rock indie band the Graeme Watkins Project, and hip hop sensation L-Tido, who was one of this year’s SA Music Awards nominees.
“It is going to be a fun-filled day for the whole family with activities such as braais and fun games for the children,” says Rachel Tambo, Spokesperson for the Liberation Walk. “That we have been able to attract such big acts to entertain participants is a reflection of the growth in support that the Liberation Walk has received since its launch last year. We are truly pleased with the range and calibre of support we have received and we believe we can only grow bigger from here. The line-up is also a celebration of our diversity as South Africans and the values that we hold dear as a people,” she added.
Proceeds from this year’s event will go towards improving the infrastructure of Ludeke Primary School in Bizana, Eastern Cape, where OR Tambo started his formal education, as well as the Adelaide Tambo School for the physically disabled.
The theme of the race is in line with Oliver and Adelaide’s belief that education is the key to liberating the mind and unlocking the potential of young people everywhere.
This year’s event promises to be bigger and better. An estimated 6000 people are expected to participate in the Liberation Walk this Saturday. Participants can choose between a five-kilometre fun walk and a 10-kilometre walk. This year, for the first time, there will also be a 21-kilometre half-marathon for running enthusiasts.
“We have ensured that we cater for people across all ages and fitness levels. Therefore it does not matter whether you’re a gym enthusiast or have not worn your takkies in a while: everyone is welcome. This is truly going to be a fun-filled family affair,” says Tambo.
A number of cabinet ministers and high profile public figures, together with local celebrities, have also signed up to participate in the Walk. Recording artist and TV presenter Stoan Seate, media personality Kass Naidoo, businesswoman and socialite Uyanda Mbuli, and TV presenter Liezel van der Westhuizen will be there to support the cause.
The totalprize money for this year is R150 000. The winners of the men’s and women’s half-marathon will each walk away with R15 000 and all race finishers will receive medals. The first 2 000 entries will receive a free goodie bag and Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Liberation Walk t-shirts.

The Liberation Walk will start and finish at O.R. Tambo International Airport Sports Ground (old Denel Grounds) off Atlas Road, Bonaero Park in Kempton Park.
