Airport-wide display explores cultural and geographic complexities of borders
SAN DIEGO, 2016-Feb-19 — /Travel PR News/ — San Diego International Airport today unveiled Point of Entry; the airport Art Program’s 2016 temporary exhibition. The theme of this year’s exhibition was inspired by the geographic, cultural, and social intricacies of borders – both real and perceived.
The exhibition explores the complexity of cultural identity and international exchange through sculpture, photography, works of paper, and personal artifacts.
“Every year, we’re excited and honored to showcase the work of the region’s cultural community through our temporary exhibition program,” said Thella F. Bowens, SAN’s president and CEO. “This year is no different. Point of Entry offers thought-provoking perspectives on a timely and topical subject.”
The year-long exhibition features 14 distinct installations displayed throughout the airport by 14 different artists and organizations, including: Center for Community Solutions; The AjA Project; Bhavna Mehta; Kate Clark; Matthew Higgins; Ron Miriello; Cat Chiu Phillips; Carlos Bueno; Guillermo Arias; Ivan Diaz Robledo; Michael Ruiz, Tim Conaway of St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center, Oscar Romo and Olivia Vivanco.
Exhibition highlights include:
· A collection of portraits by The AjA Project, sharing the stories from the immigrant and refugee communities of San Diego;
· Works of cut paper by Bhavna Mehta, which explore the artist’s immigrant experience;
· Globe sculptures designed by Ron Miriello, made from found items and recycled materials.
