2012-12-19 — /travelprnews.com/ — Last week, a team of six staff from the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel joined Conrad Evans and Don Jones of Jersey Trees for Life and took to the St. Saviour / Grouville border to begin their task of planting trees and small hedging whips.
The tree planting was the first action in a packed two year schedule of activity following the announcement Jersey Trees for Life is the Radisson Blu’s latest selected charity.
Together the team planted a total of twenty trees and 130 hedging whips. This is no mean feat as it involved first preparing the ground ensuring there were no obstructions at the spot selected for the new tree. Then once planted, ground is carefully placed over the roots to ensure that the new tree is secure; and finally to make sure that the plants are damaged as little as possible they are covered with a special plastic spiral guard.
Discussing the day Lydia Smith, Director of Sales and Marketing at the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel said, “The tree planting session was a wonderful kick-start to our programme of support for Jersey Trees for Life. Another aim of the hedgerow planting is to enable the Island’s squirrel populations to integrate and although we didn’t see any squirrels on the day, it is a really satisfying feeling to see the progress we made in just a few hours and the difference it can make it; plus it was made all the more enjoyable by the fact that it was a lovely crisp sunny winters day!
Taking responsibility for the environment and the local community plays an important role in the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel’s operations and the partnership with Jersey Trees for life demonstrates this ethos.

“The staff from the Radisson Blu all got stuck in and seemed to enjoy the hard work, I’m sure working outdoors is quite a contrast to their ordinary day to day tasks. Our team of eight enabled us to divide the day’s workload and plenty of progress was made. The team asked a lot of interesting questions and hopefully they learned a lot about our work to encourage the protection, preservation and planting of trees throughout the Island.”
