Lufthansa Group Adjusts Network Strategy with Increased Summer Flights and Flexible Response to Market Changes
(IN SHORT) The Lufthansa Group is expanding its summer 2026 flight schedule by adding around 1,600 additional flights across its network. The increase includes more long-haul services to India and expanded European routes to popular leisure destinations. Airlines within the group, including Austrian Airlines, SWISS, and Brussels Airlines, are also boosting capacity from their respective hubs. The expansion is supported by reallocating resources from Middle East routes and reflects strong demand for travel. However, the group remains cautious due to geopolitical uncertainties and rising fuel costs, maintaining flexibility to adjust operations if market conditions change.
(PRESS RELEASE) COLOGNE, Germany, 2026-Mar-31 — /Travel PR News/ — Lufthansa Group is expanding its flight programme for summer 2026, adding approximately 1,600 additional departures across its network in response to shifting travel demand and continued growth in both leisure and business travel.
The expansion includes increased long-haul capacity, particularly on routes to India. Lufthansa plans to introduce additional weekly flights from Frankfurt to Chennai and Delhi, as well as more frequent connections to Hyderabad. From Munich, the airline will add further flights to Bangalore. Meanwhile, SWISS has already increased its services to Delhi with additional weekly flights from Zurich.
Across Europe, Lufthansa plans to add around 540 extra flights from its hubs in Frankfurt and Munich between April and October 2026. The focus will be on high-demand leisure destinations in Southern Europe, including the Iberian Peninsula, Greece, and Italy, as well as selected northern destinations.
Other airlines within the group are also increasing capacity. Austrian Airlines will add around 700 flights from Vienna, SWISS will contribute over 100 additional flights from Zurich, and Brussels Airlines plans approximately 170 more flights from Brussels. Altogether, these increases bring the group’s additional capacity to around 1,600 flights during the summer season.
The expansion has been made possible by reallocating capacity from Middle East routes, allowing the group to respond more effectively to evolving travel patterns influenced by geopolitical developments. This flexible approach enables the airlines to adjust their offerings in line with changing customer demand.
While demand for travel remains strong, the Lufthansa Group notes that the broader geopolitical and economic environment remains uncertain. Rising fuel costs have already led to higher ticket prices, which could influence future demand. In response, the group is actively evaluating various scenarios to maintain operational flexibility, including adjusting route networks and managing fleet composition where necessary.
Through these changes, the Lufthansa Group aims to enhance connectivity, increase travel options, and improve availability for passengers during the peak summer travel period.
