Jersey, Durrell scoop top award in 2012 BIAZA Awards

2012-11-29 — /travelprnews.com/ — Jersey based wildlife conservation charity Durrell received one of the top awards from the zoo world last night, following the prestigious British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) awards ceremony held at West Midland Safari Park.

Durrell was commended in recognition for its pioneering work on the innovative ‘Island Bat Roost’, which took the 2012 title for Best New Enclosure.

The Island Bat Roost opened to visitors at the Trinity wildlife park in April 2012. Incorporating recycled tyres, straw bales and wine bottles; the new enclosure was designed to create an energy efficient tropical environment for these highly endangered animals, as well as an exciting new visitor attraction. The focus on using ‘green’ technology for the build was an essential part of the project reflecting Durrell’s commitment to a sustainable environment.

Discussing the award CEO of Durrell Paul Masterton said, “We’re thrilled to have been recognised in the BIAZA awards for an enclosure which we believe is truly ground-breaking. The exciting development was made possible thanks to generous donations from the Kreitman Family and from the Elizabeth Violet Annie Rouse Settlement, together with invaluable support from HSBC. Over three hundred HSBC staff volunteered for on-site construction working with our Durrell staff to complete the project, and we are incredibly grateful for all this support”

This award particularly highlights Durrell’s efforts in maintaining high levels of animal welfare and its commitment to sustainable construction techniques.

Durrell was one of 12 winners chosen from 58 entries. Held annually for over a decade, the BIAZA awards recognise outstanding contributions and achievements in the fields of wildlife conservation, advances in animal welfare and husbandry, marketing, PR, education, research, and enclosure design.
