Finavia: Lufthansa launches new flights from Munich to Kittilä Airport

HELSINKI, 2015-12-22 — /Travel PR News/ — Lapland, home of Santa, was full of Christmas spirit, when Lufthansa launched its new flights from Munich to Kittilä Airport on Saturday 19 December.

Lufthansa’s first flight landed on the newly-renovated Kittilä Airport in the afternoon. With the new route, the flight connections to Kittilä during the winter season 2015–2016 will raise to a class of their own.

“We are happy to welcome Lufthansa and winter tourists to magical Lapland. The new direct flight route is the best Christmas present imaginable to the north as it will improve the accessibility of Lapland significantly. It is simultaneously important for us at Finavia that flight connections from Kittilä to the world also improve with connecting services through Munich now added to those from Helsinki Airport,” says Joni Sundelin, Director of Finavia.

“We are delighted to be able to expand our presence in Finland with the establishment of flights between Munich and Kittilä, especially as Munich Airport connects our passengers to a large number of destinations to more than 90 European countries and nearly 20 destinations in North America and Asia,” says Paulo Akihiko Yoshikawa, Country Manager Lufthansa Finland.

“The ski resort is an Eldorado for enthusiastic winter sport fans”

Finavia, Visit Finland and tourism operators in Levi, Ylläs and Muonio cooperated closely to make the weekly route connection to Lapland happen.

“The new route demonstrates the attractiveness of tourism in Lapland, but tourism operators in the area must continue to work hard to increase the attractiveness further. We hope that the new route would also provide a positive boost to route decisions by airlines,” says Sundelin.

“Due to the departure time of 9 a.m. from Munich, our new non-stop flight to Finland’s largest and best-known winter sport centre also offers ideal connections for tourists connecting from German and most European airports. With our flights to Kittilä, we offer our customers an exclusive winter destination for the first time. The ski resort is an Eldorado for enthusiastic winter sport fans,” Paulo Akihiko Yoshikawa adds.

Finavia invests in preconditions of tourism in Lapland

Airports in Lapland are in excellent condition for increasing air traffic and tourism. Finavia invests approximately EUR 35 million in Lapland’s airports in 2014–2016. Recently, Finavia has completely revamped the passenger experience at Kittilä, Rovaniemi and Ivalo airports.
