(IN SHORT) Ethiopian Airlines has converted options for six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft into firm orders, reinforcing its long-haul expansion strategy. The new aircraft will support the airline’s intercontinental network growth and increase cargo capacity, addressing rising demand for global travel and trade. As Africa’s largest operator of the 787, Ethiopian Airlines continues to modernize its fleet with fuel-efficient aircraft while strengthening its role as a major connector between Africa and international markets. The move highlights the airline’s ongoing commitment to growth, efficiency, and improved passenger experience.
(PRESS RELEASE) ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, 2026-Apr-21 — /Travel PR News/ — Ethiopian Airlines has confirmed the conversion of options for six additional Boeing 787 Dreamliner jets into firm orders, further strengthening its long-haul fleet as part of its ongoing expansion strategy. The agreement, announced in partnership with Boeing, builds on commitments initially made in 2023 and underscores the airline’s focus on scaling its intercontinental operations.
The newly confirmed aircraft—Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners—will support Ethiopian Airlines’ plans to expand its global network from its Addis Ababa hub while also enhancing cargo capacity to meet rising demand for international travel and trade. The airline already operates the largest fleet of 787 aircraft in Africa, deploying both the 787-8 and 787-9 variants across routes linking Africa with Europe, Asia, and North America, as well as key intra-African destinations.
Mesfin Tasew, Group Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines, described the decision to finalize the order as a significant milestone in the airline’s growth journey. He noted that expanding the fleet with advanced aircraft supports the company’s commitment to operational efficiency and passenger comfort while positioning it for continued success.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is recognized for its fuel efficiency and operational flexibility, enabling airlines to serve long-haul routes more effectively while also accommodating cargo in the aircraft’s belly hold. This dual capability is particularly important for Ethiopian Airlines, which plays a key role in connecting major trade corridors across and beyond Africa.
Anbessie Yitbarek, Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa at Boeing, highlighted the long-standing partnership between the two companies. He noted that Ethiopian Airlines continues to rely on the 787 platform as a central component of its fleet modernization and expansion strategy, supporting new route development and improved passenger experience.
As one of the fastest-growing aviation groups globally, Ethiopian Airlines operates a network of more than 145 destinations and maintains a fleet of over 170 modern aircraft. The airline continues to invest in advanced aviation technology and infrastructure, reinforcing its role as a leading carrier in Africa and a key connector between the continent and the rest of the world.
