Lufthansa Launches First Retrofitted A380 Featuring New Business Class on Munich to Los Angeles Route

(IN SHORT) Lufthansa has introduced its newly retrofitted Airbus A380 featuring an upgraded Business Class cabin, with the first aircraft entering service on April 23 on a flight from Munich to Los Angeles. The modernization includes a redesigned upper-deck Business Class with 68 seats offering direct aisle access, increased privacy, and enhanced comfort through wider seating and longer bed configurations. In addition to seating improvements, the airline has upgraded its in-flight entertainment system, adding larger screens, Bluetooth connectivity, and new digital features to improve the passenger experience across all classes. The retrofit, completed in around twelve weeks in Dresden, is part of a broader programme to modernize all eight A380 aircraft by mid-2027. This initiative highlights Lufthansa’s commitment to enhancing its premium offering, combining advanced technology, improved cabin design, and operational upgrades to deliver a more competitive and modern long-haul travel experience.

(PRESS RELEASE) COLOGNE, Germany, 2026-Apr-23— /Travel PR News/ — Lufthansa has completed the modernization of the first of its Airbus A380 aircraft, introducing a newly designed Business Class cabin aimed at significantly enhancing passenger comfort and onboard experience. The upgraded aircraft, registered as D-AIMC “Mike-Charly,” entered service on April 23 with its inaugural flight from Munich to Los Angeles, marking the debut of the airline’s latest premium offering on its largest aircraft.

The retrofit introduces a completely redesigned Business Class located on the upper deck of the Airbus A380. The new configuration features 68 seats, each offering direct aisle access, increased privacy, and improved comfort. The seats, developed in collaboration with Thompson, provide a width of 58 cm and convert into beds measuring at least two meters in length. Flexible partitions between seats allow passengers to tailor their personal space, creating a more premium and private travel environment.

In addition to seating enhancements, Lufthansa has upgraded the in-flight entertainment system across all cabin classes. Business Class passengers now have access to an 18-inch Panasonic display offering a wide range of content, including films, television series, music, and digital publications. New features include Bluetooth connectivity for personal headphones, an interactive 3D flight map, improved sound quality, and onboard cameras, all supported by a redesigned and more intuitive user interface.

The modernization of the first aircraft was completed in approximately twelve weeks at Elbe Flugzeugwerke in Dresden, where the retrofit programme began earlier in 2026. Alongside the cabin upgrades, the aircraft also underwent routine maintenance as part of the process. Following the completion of “Mike-Charly,” work has already commenced on the next aircraft in the programme, D-AIMH “Mike-Hotel,” which features a distinctive anniversary livery.

Lufthansa plans to retrofit all eight of its A380 aircraft with the new Business Class configuration by mid-2027, ensuring a consistent premium experience across its flagship fleet. The initiative reflects the airline’s broader strategy to enhance long-haul travel offerings by combining upgraded cabin design with modern technology and improved passenger amenities.

The launch of the refurbished A380 on the Munich–Los Angeles route represents a key milestone in Lufthansa’s fleet modernization efforts, positioning the airline to meet evolving customer expectations in the premium travel segment while maintaining its competitive standing in long-haul aviation.
