New addition brings heavyweight federal government expertise.
The Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC) has strengthened its board of directors by appointing John Knubley. As Deputy Minister of Industry Canada, Knubley has a full plate of work, guiding his department as it looks for more ways for Canadian industry to be more competitive and productive to boost Canadians’ economic and social wellbeing.
Knubley has a wealth of experience working in the federal government. From 2009 to September 2012 he served as Deputy Minister, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. His successes there included supporting the development and implementation of Bill C-18 and The Marketing Freedom Act, which curtailed the monopoly of the Canadian Wheat Board. On top of that, Knubley rounded off negotiations with provinces over a new five-year series of agricultural programs with a heavy emphasis on developing markets and innovation.
Knubley also served as Deputy Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs at the Privy Council Office in 2008-2009, Associate Deputy Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Communities 2007-2008 and Associate Deputy Minister of Natural Resources Canada 2006-2007. From 2002 to 2006 Knubley lived in Halifax, NS, and acted as Vice-President (Nova Scotia) of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.
His career in public service stretches back to 1980 at the Economic Council of Canada.
Married with three children, Knubley has always been keen to stretch himself academically. His qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University, US, plus a Master of Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford, UK. As if that weren’t impressive enough, Knubley also has a post-graduate diploma from the Institut Européen des Hautes Études Internationales in Nice, France, and a Master’s Public Administration degree from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.
