BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport Sets New June Passenger Record

Airport Reports 2.19 Million Passengers, Busiest June and Second-Busiest Month Ever for BWI Marshall

2012-08-01 — /travelprnews.com/ — Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport announced today that 2,189,148 commercial passengers flew through the Airport in June 2012. That figure, an increase of 2.9 percent over June 2011, was a new record for the month of June, and the second busiest month in the history of BWI Marshall.

Southwest Airlines, the largest airline at BWI Marshall, served 1,263,110 passengers in June, a 6.5 percent increase over June 2011. Other airlines to show growth for the month include Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, American Airlines, and British Airways. Total cargo shipments for June 2012 increased 1.7 percent to 20.85 million pounds.

“Consistent growth at BWI Marshall affirms the strength and success of this market,” said Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley. “We continue to make investments and improvements to ensure that BWI Marshall remains a convenient gateway to the world.”

Work began last month on a major terminal enhancement program at BWI Marshall. The improvements will include a new security checkpoint, a secure connector between Concourses B and C with new passenger amenities, and an improved Concourse C facility with enhanced airline gate hold rooms and new food and retail space. BWI Marshall is also conducting preliminary work on a comprehensive, multi-year airfield pavement rehabilitation program.

In recent months, several airlines started or announced new air service for BWI Marshall. Bahamasair initiated service to Freeport, Grand Bahama Island in May. Condor Airlines started flights to Frankfurt, Germany in early July. Earlier this month, Spirit Airlines announced that it would start service to Dallas/Fort Worth and Fort Lauderdale in September.

“Passenger traffic continues to rise, thanks to growth from our existing airline partners and the addition of new service,” said Paul J. Wiedefeld, Executive Director of BWI Marshall. “We remain focused on providing excellent customer service and an efficient gateway for travelers throughout Maryland and the National Capital region.”
