More Than 2.2 Million Passengers in July 2012, Busiest Month Ever
2012-09-07 — /travelprnews.com/ — Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley announced today that a record number of passengers flew through Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport in July 2012. In total, 2,222,329 commercial passengers used the airport, a 0.8 percent increase over the previous monthly record set in July 2011 with 2,205,035 passengers.
“This new record represents the steady growth and success that BWI Marshall has experienced,” said Governor O’Malley. “The Airport is an important resource that supports jobs, transportation and tourism throughout the region. We will continue working hard to meet the needs of travelers throughout Maryland, the National Capital region, and the world.”
Southwest Airlines, the largest airline at BWI Marshall Airport, served 1,294,533 passengers in July, a 6.8 percent increase over July 2011. International passenger traffic also grew for the month, increasing 17.3 percent to 70,376 passengers. Cargo shipments grew in July to 19,944,506 pounds, an increase of 2.1 percent.

In recent months, several new airlines started or announced new air service for BWI Marshall. On September 6, Spirit Airlines is set to start service to Dallas/Fort Worth and Fort Lauderdale. Condor Airlines started flights to Frankfurt, Germany in early July.
Work began this summer on two major capital programs that will provide a modern, convenient, and safe BWI Marshall Airport for the future. Construction started on a significant terminal enhancement program in June. And in August, one of BWI Marshall’s primary runways was temporarily closed as part of a comprehensive, multi-year airfield pavement rehabilitation program.
