• Higher number of intercontinental flights
• New: Newark and Tehran, Ibiza and Lamezia Terme
• Europe: More frequent flights to London and Frankfurt
• Austria: Ticket tax leads to reduced passenger volume, reduction in flights to Salzburg and Klagenfurt
Vienna, Austria, 2014-2-21 — /travelprnews.com/ — Following the conversion of its cabins, Austrian Airlines now has all its long-haul aircraft in operation once again. Moreover, an additional 777 will be added as of July 2014. This will allow the Austrian flagship carrier to significantly expand its offering of intercontinental flights again compared to the previous summer. Flights to Chicago will be operated on a daily basis as of May 1, 2014 (five times per week up until now), and the daily flight to Washington will be operated using a larger aircraft as of July. Daily flights to Toronto (previously six times weekly) and to Dehli (previously five times per week) will be expanded to a daily basis as of March 30, 2014. Austrian Airlines has a new destination in its flight plan, namely Newark in New Jersey in the USA, featuring five weekly flights. As a result, Austrian Airlines will operate flights to the New York Metropolitan Area up to two times each day. Starting in July Male will be added to the airline’s flight destinations with one weekly flight. Up until now Austrian Airlines only flew to the Maldives during the winter. Tehran will also already be included in the route network as of March 11, 2014, featuring five weekly flights to the Iranian capital.
The flight offering of Austrian Airlines to European destinations will be slightly expanded. There will be more frequent flight connections to Frankfurt and London in the future (four instead of three times daily to London, six instead of five daily flights to Frankfurt). In cooperation with Lufthansa, the two airlines will offer flights to Frankfurt on an hourly basis, comprising a total of thirteen daily flights as a shuttle service. The offering to Central and Eastern Europe will also be expanded. Flight frequency to Krakow will increase to six times per week. In the future, Austrian Airlines will also offer up to two daily flights to the Polish capital of culture. In the tourism segment, the Vienna-Ibiza and Vienna-Lamezia Terme routes will be offered once weekly under the Austrian myHoliday brand. The increased offering in the summer reflects improved aircraft productivity.
Less demand from the federal provinces
The domestic airline has reduced the frequency of its flight service within the country. Austrian Airlines will operate three flights per day to Salzburg Airport as of March 30, 2014 (start of the summer flight schedule), instead of the current level of four daily flights. The five daily flights between Klagenfurt and Vienna did not meet expectations. Nevertheless, Klagenfurt will continue to be well connected to the Vienna flight hub with four daily flight connections. “We will continue to maintain our presence in the Austrian federal provinces. Nevertheless, as an air carrier the decline in passenger volumes in Austria hurts us quite a lot. One key reason for this development is the introduction of the ticket tax. We have to respond and are therefore shifting our capacities from Austria to Europe,” says Chief Commercial Officer Karsten Benz. More specifically, the particular flight service with the weakest capacity utilization on the Vienna-Salzburg route will be terminated. The afternoon flights from and to Klagenfurt will also be eliminated from the flight schedule.
The summer flight schedule for 2014 applies as of March 30, 2014, unless otherwise indicated.
Changes in the flight schedule from Graz: Düsseldorf instead of Stuttgart
Starting on May 8, 2014, flights departing from Graz will target Düsseldorf more frequently. The additional flights OS207/8 on Thursdays and Fridays leaving from Graz at 2:10 p.m. and arriving in Düsseldorf at 3:45 p.m., with the return flight from Düsseldorf departing at 4:20 p.m. and arriving in Vienna at 5:55 p.m. will complement the existing morning and evening flight service. In contrast, the afternoon flights from Graz to Stuttgart will be terminated as of May 1, 2014, whereas the two existing morning and evening flights will be continued.
