Winnipeg Richardson International Airport welcomed 4.5 million passengers in 2018, setting a new passenger record

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, 2019-Jan-23 — /Travel PR News/ — Winnipeg Richardson International Airport set a new passenger record, welcoming 4.5 million passengers through the airport in 2018.

The airport saw its total passenger volume grow for the fifth consecutive year. By working with partners to add new routes and expand offerings, the airport saw a significant increase in U.S. transborder and international travel, as well as strong growth in domestic travel. Airport passenger volume was up 4.2% over the previous year, and equates to more than 12,000 passengers per day in total. Traffic volume was bolstered by the record summer, with August 2018 being the busiest month of all time at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport.

“WAA continues to work with our partners to expand travel options for our region. Another record year is just further proof that our plan is working and the world recognizes the continued rejuvenation of our city and province,” said Barry Rempel, President and CEO of Winnipeg Airports Authority. “WAA remains committed to meeting the needs of business and unlocking the potential of the airport for the benefit of the community.”

Commercial freight transportation was also a success story in 2018, with more goods flowing through the airport. The weight of the average cargo-carrying plane was up 5%, a key metric used to measure performance. This is reflected in U.S. transborder and international cargo weight being up 17.5% on the year and domestic weight also seeing a slight increase.

New routes from low cost carriers brought additional options for travellers in 2018, including brand new non-stop destinations like Flair Air’s Winnipeg to Miami, Florida route. WAA will continue to collaborate with new and familiar partners to ensure a successful 2019 at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport.
