WAA calls on Local Businesses to Support Winnipeg Harvest’s Grow-A-Row program

2013-06-04 — /travelprnews.com/ — As a longtime supporter of Winnipeg Harvest, Winnipeg Airports Authority is issuing a challenge to local businesses to Grow-A-Row this summer to help nourish families in our community.

This summer marks the eighteenth year Winnipeg Airports Authority is participating in Winnipeg Harvest’s Grow-A-Row program. Over the years, they have donated more than 30,765 lbs of vegetables from their airport garden to help ‘fight hunger and feed hope’.

“Being a responsible member of the community is a top priority for the team at Winnipeg Airports Authority,” said Barry Rempel, President & CEO of Winnipeg Airports Authority. “We are fortunate to call this region our home and privileged to partner with a number of local charities, helping fuel our mission. We challenge other local businesses to climb on board and Grow-A-Row for Winnipeg Harvest.”

“We are challenging businesses to Grow-A-Row for Winnipeg Harvest. We can all play a role in the challenge of fighting hunger and feeding hope,” said David Northcott, Executive Director of Winnipeg Harvest. “Winnipeg Harvest is committed to reducing by half the need for food banks by the year 2020. Winnipeg is blessed to have a wonderful business community with a strong sense of corporate social responsibility. We are certain business will step forward to play their part.”

The Grow-A-Row program is easy! Simply plant a garden at your workplace and commit as a team to donate one, three, or all the rows in your garden to Winnipeg Harvest. No green space? No problem, consider the Blue Box Gardening Program. Winnipeg Harvest provides blue boxes normally used to carry recyclables and the seeds your company will need to start a garden.

Winnipeg Airports Authority is hosting a public launch of the 2013 Grow-A-Row season on Wednesday, June 5th at 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on the airport campus garden. Hear from Winnipeg Harvest’s David Northcott and WAA’s Barry Rempel about the rewards of growing a garden to help feed families in our community.

Local organizations interested in accepting the Grow-A-Row Challenge are invited to attend the event and pick up seeds and information to get their gardens growing.

About Grow-A-Row
Grow-A-Row was created in 1986 when Winnipeg residents Ron and Eunice O’Donovan produced more potatoes in their backyard garden than they could consume. Their vegetables were so well received by Winnipeg Harvest, the O’Donovans encouraged friends and neighbours to also donate surplus produce. Since then, Grow-A-Row has yielded millions of pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables.
