United, Hawaiian to relocate to Terminal 3

Carriers will become McCarran’s first D Concourse tenants
to utilize T3’s ticketing, security and baggage claim facilities

2012-08-24 — /travelprnews.com/ — The Clark County Department of Aviation will on Wednesday morning complete the third and final phase of its Terminal 3 opening when United Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines move their ticketing and baggage claim services into McCarran International Airport’s new 1.9 million-square-foot facility.

Since it opened on June 27, Terminal 3 has served carriers that operate exclusively from one or more of the 14 “E gates” located within T3’s main building. However, T3 was designed to also serve the ticketing, security and baggage claim needs of up to 26 gates at McCarran’s nearby D Concourse, and United and Hawaiian will become the first carriers to utilize the new terminal in this manner.

Once United and Hawaiian passengers have checked in and cleared security at T3, they will take a 45-second tram ride to the nearby D gates before boarding their aircraft. Upon arrival in Las Vegas, these airlines’ customers will take a tram to T3 to claim baggage and find ground transportation.

“For more than 14 years, every D Concourse passenger has traveled to and from their gate by way of an automated tram system that begins and ends its journey at Terminal 1,” said Randall H. Walker, Director of Aviation for Clark County, Nev. “T3 now allows us to split the existing and future D gates’ traffic pool between two terminals. This will ease peak-period congestion along McCarran’s roadways and within its garages, ticketing lobbies, security checkpoints and baggage claim areas.”

Terminal 3 is a standalone facility located east of McCarran’s Terminal 1, just south of Russell Road (see attached map). All foreign-based airlines have operated from T3 since it opened in late June; Alaska Airlines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Sun Country Airlines and Virgin America relocated to T3 at the end of July. Travelers flying on AirTran, Allegiant, American, Delta, Great Lakes, Omni, Southwest, Spirit and US Airways will continue to begin and end their Las Vegas trips at Terminal 1.

Electronic signs have been placed above each roadway leading into McCarran to inform approaching drivers which airlines are based at Terminal 1 or Terminal 3. Likewise, the airport’s McCarran.com website was recently redesigned to better emphasize where airport users should look for their respective airlines. Either resource will quickly steer airport users toward their intended terminal.
