Shopping Becomes An Art Form – small ordinary shop is Open at the Chicago Cultural Center

A Satellite Performance of Industry of the Ordinary

2012-11-06 — /travelprnews.com/ — Think small; think ordinary!  That’s the plan for the latest installation of Industry of the Ordinary (IOTO), with “small ordinary shop” located in the Michigan Avenue Gallery North in the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington, now through January 1, 2013.

Industry of the Ordinary: Sic Transit Gloria Mundi is a ten-year retrospective of the collaborative team of Adam Brooks and Mathew Wilson whose work is a celebration of the everyday which has been on display at the Chicago Cultural Center since August 17 and runs through February 17, 2013.  The small ordinary shop is a collaboration with the IOTO artists and The Small Manufacturing Alliance (SMALL) which promotes artists, designers and individuals who manufacture products locally.

While the shop functions as a normal store with all the items available for sale, it is also part of the IOTO exhibit.  The artists view their interaction with the community (shoppers and buyers) as a vital part of their “performance” in conjunction with the exhibit.

Items available for sale include hand-crafted furniture, housewares and textiles, one of a kind jewelry, unique accessories & clothing, organic soaps and body products, artist prints and paper goods, artisanal food items and much more, each designed and created by a Chicago artist.  The “shop” opens each day at 11 a.m. and closes each night at 5:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday, and 5 p.m. on Sunday.
