Shannon, Ireland, 2014-12-23 — /Travel PR News/ — An estimated 15% more passengers will make the journey home over Christmas period through Shannon Airport as traffic growth across 2014 continues into the festive season.

The Christmas travel period began in earnest at the weekend and by the first week in January, some 51,000 will have used Shannon Airport to get to and from their chosen Christmas destination.  It is the second successive Christmas, since the airport was made independent on New Year’s Day 2013, that it has recorded strong growth.

Last Christmas saw passenger numbers for the festive season grow for the first time in six years and this year they are up by almost 45% on Christmas 2012.

Shannon Airport CEO Neil Pakey said it will be Shannon’s busiest Christmas since 2009.  “We’ve had a really busy start to the Christmas period.  We expect passenger numbers to be up by 15% up on last year’s figures,” he said.

“It’s a great time to be at an airport as whether passengers are outbound or inbound, there’s typically a homecoming happening and that creates a magical mood.”
