Sydney, Australia, 2013-10-23— /travelprnews.com/ — Qantas today announced Alasdair McLuckie as winner of the Visual Arts category in the 2013 Spirit of Youth Awards (SOYA 365), which recognises outstanding young Australian artists.
The Melbourne-based, talented young Artist becomes one of only nine recipients of the award.
Hundreds of talented Australian designers entered SOYA 365 for a chance to win the prestigious title as well as $5,000 in cash, $5,000 in Qantas flights and a rare 12-month mentorship opportunity with renowned Curator, Elizabeth Ann Macgregor OBE.
Alasdair’s works of graphic style and formalist sensibility adopt a meticulous process through drawing, craft and sculpture to explore and reinterpret themes of folklore, ritual, and creation. He is an artist well on his way to national recognition with artworks already acquired by the likes of MONA, Artbank, Art & Australia and the Monash University Museum of Art.
Alasdair said he was thrilled to receive a SOYA award that recognises Australian artists.
“I’m thrilled to be the recipient of such a unique and thoughtful award. The timing couldn’t be more perfect for me, and I can’t wait to make the most of Qantas and Elizabeth Ann Macgregor’s extraordinary generosity,” said Alasdair.
Visual Arts Mentor Elizabeth Ann Macgregor is the Director and prime mover behind the extraordinary success of Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art who selected Alasdair from a talented pool of young artists.
“Judging SOYA this year was particularly difficult, however Alasdair McLuckie was awarded top honour as he doesn’t shy away from the big subjects of creation, ritual and mythology,” said Elizabeth Ann.
“His alluring work shows confidence through the movement of his practice into diverse media and the exploration of a range of content and styles.
“I believe that Alasdair will benefit significantly from a year’s mentorship, with guidance to assist him in his future artistic career goals.”
The runners up were Freya Pitt from Victoria and Jacobus Capone from Western Australia.
