Oakland International Airport continues to trend upward into 2016 with 8.7% passenger growth in January

UPWARD TREND CONTINUES FOR AIRPORT WITH 8.7% PASSENGER GROWTH IN JANUARY

Oakland, CA, 2016-Mar-01 — /Travel PR News/ — With more flights, new destinations, and a terminal renovation underway, Oakland International Airport continues to trend upward into 2016. According to reports for January, total passenger traffic at the airport reached 843,073, up 8.7% from 775,420 total passengers in January 2015, based on 5.8% more operations and 5.7% more seats.

Compounding this growth is the fact that the numbers entering 2016 build on an 8.4% increase from January 2014 to 2015, which translates into passenger traffic growth of 15% in just two years.

After its first full year and first million riders, the rail connection to Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) saw an 8.3% increase from January 2015, with 74,361 riders in January 2016.

Air freight at OAK remained stable with a slight decline of 0.4% in January.

Acting Aviation Director, Kristi McKenney, attributed the January numbers to the public’s response to a thriving Bay Area economy and the Airport’s added services. “We are very pleased to see the numbers posted as we entered 2016, and that they are consistent with the growth from the previous year. It confirms that the Airport’s growth is sustained, and we look forward to continuing on a growth trajectory.”

Oakland International expects further growth as it introduces nonstop flights to London-Gatwick in May on Norwegian Air, and nonstop service to Reno-Tahoe and St. Louis this summer on Southwest Airlines.
