2013-01-31 — /travelprnews.com/ — The City of Kansas City, Mo., Aviation Department reports that Kansas City International Airport recorded 742,883 passengers arriving and departing through its gates in December, which represents a decrease of 11.4 percent from December 2011. Passenger boardings at KCI were down 11.6 percent, with a total of 377,375 during December. For the year to date, boardings at KCI totaled 4,900,375, a decrease of 3.9 percent from the same period last year.
The number of peak-day scheduled aircraft departures for December was 177. Service was offered to 46 nonstop markets. There was an average of 35,663 arriving and departing seats available in the market each day, down two percent from last year.
“We ended up in a down year because of significant decreases in airline departures and available seats in the market plus increased average fares,” said Tom McKenna, assistant director of aviation – marketing for the Aviation Department. “We have additional service coming online to Boston, Minneapolis, Orlando and Seattle, so we hope the trend will be upward in the next few months.”
Air cargo tonnages, which consist of both freight and mail transported by air, for all carriers at KCI were down 8.9 percent in December. For the year to date, air cargo at KCI is up 2.0 percent from the same period last year. Air freight handled at KCI during December amounted to 15.6 million pounds, which represents a year-over-year decrease of 7.6 percent. Air mail for December was down 64.9 percent from December 2011. The all-cargo carriers reported 4 daily departures for December.
