Jersey’s 2016 major professional sporting event: The Acorn Jersey Open, La Moye Golf Club from 8th to 11th June

JERSEY, 2016-Jan-22 — /Travel PR News/ — The Acorn Jersey Open has been confirmed for the 2016 European Senior Tour and will return to La Moye Golf Club from Wednesday 8th to Saturday 11th June. The tournament is Jersey’s major professional sporting event on the 2016 calendar and will bring multiple benefits to the Island; giving local residents of all ages the chance to play, spectate and/or volunteer over the three days.

The £200,000 prize fund will once again be contested in a pro-am format, with each professional joined by an amateur partner for three rounds before the professionals play their final round on the Saturday of the tournament.

“Acorn’s commitment to sponsoring and delivering this exciting event is excellent news,” said Andy Stubbs, Managing Director of the European Senior Tour.  “The Acorn Jersey Open is one of the highlights of our schedule.  The Senior Tour showcases the Island as a top class destination for sport and leisure; both to the visiting professionals who come to the Island especially for the event and for those who tune in around the globe to Sky Television coverage.”

Staging such a prestigious event will benefit the local community and tourism industry at the start of the main holiday season.  Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture Senator Lyndon Farnham explains: “The Acorn Jersey Open is a perfect example of the events we are trying to attract.  Local businesses will benefit from the incremental spend by those who visit to take part and/or spectate.  Showcasing our beautiful Island through the television coverage, to potential visitors in our UK and European markets, supports our tourism goals.  And the Tour’s commitment to showcase golf to local groups during the Open, through dedicated events targeted at keen young golfers and novice school children, coupled with an open invitation for anyone to come and spectate over the three days, adds to the community benefits.”

Acorn Finance remain lead sponsor of this year’s Jersey Open, following a successful foray into Senior golf in 2015.  Richard Harrop, CEO of Acorn Group said: “As a locally-owned and Jersey-based finance group, we are committed to the Jersey business and resident community and are delighted to once again to be involved in making this exciting flagship event happen.  We would like to thank Locate Jersey and International Plywood for their continued support, which is fundamental to staging a tournament of this size and investment.”

The professional and celebrity player list will be released in the coming months.  Australian Peter Fowler is set to defend the title he won last year, finishing one stroke clear of Anders Forsbrand before going on to triumph the following week in the ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship.
