Indy Airport kicks off holiday season with public events

Santa’s Arrival Kicks Off Holiday Season

INDIANAPOLIS, IN, 2018-Nov-27 — /Travel PR News/ — Santa will dash across the tarmac this afternoon at the Indianapolis International Airport (IND), arriving on a fire truck for his grand entrance to greet more than 1,000 children and families. Today’s sold out Holly Jolly Jetway celebration kicks off a month full of public holiday events. This year’s events include art exhibitions, live holiday music, and special events hosted by the airport’s airline partners.

“The Indy airport is a gateway of connection — including connecting community to celebrate all that makes the season bright, like music, art and time together,” said Indianapolis Airport Authority Executive Director Mario Rodriguez.

The following events will take place at the Indy airport this holiday season.

Snowplow Unveiling

Art students from McClelland Elementary School painted one of the airport’s 18-foot snowplows with a special theme. The snowplow, which will be used to keep the runways clear this winter, will be on display on the Upper Level Departures drive from Dec. 5 until Dec. 19, unless it is called into action before then.

Snowball Express

On Dec. 8, the American Airlines Snowball Express will be departing from Indianapolis. The Snowball Express is an all-expense-paid holiday trip to Orlando, Florida for children who have lost a parent while serving in the U.S. military since Sept. 11, 2001. The Indianapolis flight is one of 15 charter flights departing for this event.

Holiday Music Showcase

Starting Dec. 14 and running through Dec. 24 various musical performances will take place in Civic Plaza for this year’s holiday showcase. Local artists performing will include the Young Hoosier State Piano Competition winners, Indy Klez, Monica Herzig, the Owl Music Group, Carl Hines, The Rossi Clarinet Consort, the Village Carolers, Bryan Thompson, Jan Aldridge Clark and choirs from numerous area elementary and high schools.

Delta Air Lines Blood Drive

On Dec. 18, Delta Air Lines and the American Red Cross will be hosting a blood drive at the Indy airport. The event will be located in Baggage Claim from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. To schedule an appointment, visit www.redcrossblood.org and use the sponsor code DeltaIND.

Winter Art Exhibits

Travelers also can view the winter art exhibitions, featuring three Hoosier artists. The Indy airport has partnered with the Arts Council of Indianapolis to bring public art displays to the terminal. Pieces by Phil Tennant, Bruce Armstrong and Phillip Campbell will be on display until March 10, 2019.

Throughout the holidays, passengers will be able to enjoy the decorated halls of the terminal, or snap a photo next to the –NDY sign – with the holiday tree providing a festive backdrop – as travelers take off for their holiday travels.
