easyJet will resume flights to Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt

The flights go on sale today from Manchester and Gatwick along with two other new summer routes from Manchester

LONDON, UK, 2020-Jan-17 — /Travel PR News/ — easyJet, the UK’s leading  airline, has announced it will resume flights to Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt for the first time since November 2015. Following the recent lifting of government restrictions on UK flights to Sharm el Sheikh, easyJet will offer two flights a week to the famous Red Sea destination commencing on 7 June from Manchester and 30 September from London Gatwick. Both year-round services go on sale today (JANUARY  15, 2020) at www.easyjet.com and will operate twice weekly with fares starting from £99.99.

Continuing a period of expansion at Manchester, in addition to Sharm el Sheikh, easyJet has also announced a further two new routes from Manchester which have gone on sale today. Flights to the Italian capital city Rome will operate three times a week starting on 7 June along with twice-weekly flights to Menorca with the first flight departing on 4 June.  With Egypt proving popular in the North West, the airline is also extending its winter flights to Hurghada to operate year-round three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays with the first flight departing on 1 June.

Having invested in the region in recent years, easyJet now operates 70 routes and bases 19 aircraft at Manchester Airport offering customers in the North West a vast choice of destinations to explore throughout Europe and beyond. The airline expects to carry over 37,000 passengers on the new routes in the first twelve months which means that annually it will now fly almost five million passengers to and from the airport.

Ali Gayward, UK Country Manager, easyJet, said:

“easyJet has seen significant growth at Manchester Airport over the last two years and has now carried 22 million passengers since operations began in 2008. In the past year alone, we have grown more than 17% driven by the basing of seven new aircraft which have enabled the introduction of popular new routes. Our investment has provided economic benefits for the local community including more jobs and so we are delighted to be continuing our expansion at the airport.

“We are looking forward to operating these flights this summer and adding them to an ever growing range of great destinations for our customers. The resumption of services to Sharm el Sheikh and year-round flights to Hurghada are both fantastic destinations for both summer and winter sun, with stunning beaches boasting crystal clear waters and great diving and marine life to explore, we know they will once again be a popular choice for our customers.”

Stephen Turner, Commercial Director at Manchester Airport, said:

“We are thrilled that easyJet is bringing these additional services to Manchester Airport, which will enhance the choice available this summer to the 22 million people across our wider catchment area.

“The return of easyJet’s route to Sharm El Sheikh is very welcome and we are sure it will prove immensely popular with sunseekers all year round.”

easyJet flies on more of Europe’s most popular routes than any other airline and carries more than 100 million passengers annually – more than 16 million travelling for business. easyJet flies over 334 aircraft on 1061 routes to 159 airports across 36 countries. Over 300 million Europeans live within one hour’s drive of an easyJet airport.

easyJet aims to be a good corporate citizen, employing people on local contracts in eight countries across Europe in full compliance with national laws and recognising their trade unions. The airline supports a number of local charities and also has a corporate partnership with UNICEF which has raised over £13m for the most vulnerable children since it was established in 2012.

The airline takes sustainability seriously and is the first major airline to operate net-zero carbon flights across its whole network. The airline is achieving this goal by offsetting the carbon emissions from the fuel used for all of its flights. The airline sees this as an interim measure until new technology becomes available to de-carbonise aviation. In the meantime, easyJet will continue to support innovative technology, operate efficiently and aim to fill most of its seats. Since 2000 easyJet has reduced the carbon emissions for each kilometre flown by a passenger by over one-third (33.67%) and has a target to reach a 38% reduction by 2022.

Innovation is in easyJet’s DNA – from our launch over almost 25 years ago when we changed the way people fly to the present day where we lead the industry in digital, web, engineering and operational innovations to make travel more easy and affordable for our passengers.

The airline was recently named as Britain’s Most Admired Company of 2019 in the transport sector. Britain’s Most Admired Companies study is the longest-running annual survey of corporate reputation in the UK.
