Discover Houston and Atlanta: Lesser-Known US Destinations from Manchester Airport

Manchester, UK, 2023-Jul-05 — /Travel PR News/ — Manchester Airport is the only English airport outside London serving the USA. Last year hundreds of thousands of passengers from the North took advantage of having flights to destinations like New York and Orlando on their doorstep.

But we also fly to some lesser-known US cities too, so to mark the Fourth of July we’re looking at two of those destinations in a bit more detail. Here’s everything you need to know about Houston and Atlanta.

Houston

Houston is the fourth most populated city in the USA, and the most populated in the southern states. It’s in the south of Texas and stretches to Galveston Bay, off the Gulf of Mexico, in the south. It’s part of the famous Texas Triangle, made up of the Southern State’s five largest cities: Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio and Houston.

What is there to do in Houston?

Houston has a wide range of attractions. Nicknamed Space City, it’s home to the Johnson Space Center, the base for Mission Control for every NASA manned spaceflight since 1965. Tourists can visit Space Center Houston where they will be able to see everything from space shuttles and lunar modules to moonwalk suits and even moon rocks – including one of only eight in the world that people are allowed to touch.

It’s also home to some of the best museums in America including the Houston Museum of Natural Science, which is famous for its wide range of dinosaur skeletons and an ever changing selection of guest exhibitions, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Children’s Museum.

Sports fans can visit Minute Made Park, home to the Houston Astros baseball team and a fascinating and historic stadium in its own right, or catch the Houston Rockets basketball team playing at the Toyota Center.

While Houston is on the coast, it doesn’t have a beach of its own. It is, however, within easy reach of several beaches on the Gulf of Mexico. Sylvan Beach is a little over half an hour’s drive from Houston and is well-known for its fine sand and warm waters, as well as a 32-acre park complex.

What’s the weather like?

Houston, like the rest of Texas, gets hot. In the summer months top temperatures average 33c. Even in the winter months top daytime temperatures are usually in the mid-teens.

How do I get there?

Singapore Airlines flies direct from Manchester to Houston. The flight takes around nine hours.

Atlanta

Atlanta is another Southern States destination. It’s the state capital of Georgia and is known for its prominent role in the US Civil Rights movement and birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr, for its thriving hip-hop scene, as the home of Coca-Cola and for old-fashioned southern hospitality. It’s also home to the world’s busiest airport.

What is there to do in Atlanta?

Atlanta played a key role in the US Civil Rights movement. While you’re in Atlanta you can visit the Martin Luther King Jr National Historic Site where part of the community Martin Luther King Jr grew up in has been preserved or you could go to the National Center for Civil and Human Rights and experience a range of thought-provoking and moving exhibitions.

The National Center for Civil and Human Rights is on a campus alongside the World of Coca-Cola, where people can celebrate the history of the world famous drink, and the Georgia Aquarium, which is home to two giant whale sharks.

Piedmont Park and Centennial Olympic Park represent two oases within the city while the Atlanta Botanical Garden is world-renowned.

Atlanta is also famous for food and drink – and southern hospitality. Barbecue and fried chicken are the staples but it also has a thriving international food scene and a huge number of craft breweries.

What’s the weather like?

The weather in Atlanta gets hot in the summer. Average top temperatures are in the low 30s in June, July and August.

How do I get there?

Virgin Atlantic flies direct to Atlanta from Manchester. The flight takes around nine hours. The city’s Hartsfield–Jackson International Airport is the world’s busiest airport by passenger volume and puts passengers from Manchester within one transfer of over 150 US airports.
