Budapest Airport starts construction of two more security screening lanes

Budapest, Hungary, 2020-Feb-13 — /Travel PR News/ — Following the two new passenger security screening lanes completed last year, Budapest Airport has commenced the construction of two more channels. The works will be completed before the summer peak season, thus taking the total number of screening lanes to 18.

Budapest Airport will install two new passenger security screening lanes at Terminal 2B ahead of the summer peak season, thus further speeding up mandatory pre-flight security procedures. The new lanes will be equipped with the latest, automatic technology, which returns empty trays to the beginning of the lane, once screening has been completed.

Waiting time for security screening is currently below the international benchmark of 15 minutes, even during the busiest peaks. With the two new lanes, this will be sustainable, even with the increasing traffic. Thanks to this development, it will be possible to screen departing passengers during the busiest periods via 18 lanes concurrently. By way of comparison, this is 50% more capacity than at the opening of the SkyCourt in 2011. Budapest Airport implemented the expansion of the security checkpoint by reducing commercial areas. The value of the investment is nearly 440 million HUF.

Security processes are continuously being optimized at Budapest Airport; the operator already increased the screening capacity significantly in 2019 by constructing new lanes, and the passage of the up to 30 000 passengers departing per day is facilitated by a series of technological innovations and active queue management. Several different development projects have contributed to speeding up passage through security, including the installation of counters to prepare for the screening of liquids, the use of larger trays than previously for passengers to pack their personal belongings and the extension of the screening lanes, whereby more passengers can be screened concurrently and the entire process is shortened. Traveling through Budapest Airport has also become more predictable, thanks to new monitors in front of the checkpoint, informing passengers whether the expected queuing time is shorter on the A or the B side of Terminal 2.

Budapest Airport was also one of the first to introduce a new technical solution in October, whereby passengers can leave larger electronic items inside their hand baggage; such objects can now be screened without them being placed in a separate tray. This procedure was tested for five months prior to introduction, and will be used at the two new lanes opening in the summer as well.

The results of the international airport service quality (ASQ) survey also confirm the security screening process. The speed and the thoroughness of security screening, the politeness of screening staff and the feeling of safety and security regularly feature amongst the criteria rated highest by passengers.
