Brussels, Belgium, 2013-12-11 — /travelprnews.com/ — Five days on the road, covering a distance of 240 kilometres, 75 of which involve rough terrain: From 31 January to 4 February 2014, 29 Brussels Airlines staff and roughly the same number of representatives of other Belgian companies will switch to another mode of transport as part of the Bike for Africa campaign. Rather than travelling by plane, they will get on their bikes. At the end of their bike tour through Uganda, they aim to hand over a donation of at least 100,000 euros to the Ugandan aid initiative Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services in Uganda (CoRSU), as well as to the Belgian non-governmental organisation United Fund for Belgium.
With the money they raise, staff will support children in Uganda and Belgium who require medical interventions or rehabilitation measures. Two Belgian care centres, De Engelbewaarder in Aartrijke and Les Sentiers in Brussels, will also receive bikes for their protégés. The money will be collected in the run-up to the campaign through various initiatives, such as the sale of home-made waffles and biscuits, and through the acquisition of further sponsors. Brussels Airlines, which belongs to the Lufthansa Group, will be responsible for logistics, including the transport of the bikes.
The Bike for Africa campaign is an initiative of the b.foundation for Africa at Brussels Airlines, which supports staff members engaged in a range of charitable projects. These activities have the added benefit of promoting team building in the workforce. Set up in 2010, the foundation is an integral component of corporate social responsibility at Brussels Airlines, which maintains strong ties with Africa. For more than 80 years, the Belgian carrier has served numerous destinations in Africa.
Employees right across the Lufthansa Group are sending out a signal of solidarity. The organisations Cargo Human Care, HelpAlliance and Swiss Kinderstiftung (Children’s Foundation) were set up by Group employees to help needy and destitute people around the world. The Lufthansa Group also provides logistical, financial and organisational support for these aid organisations. For more information, please see the latest Web Special. Photos can be found here.
