Austria’s Olympic team flies to Sochi aboard Austrian Airlines

Vienna, Austria, 2014-2-5 — /travelprnews.com/ — This morning flight OS2763 of Austrian Airlines departed from Vienna to the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics. In addition to the many athletes and trainers, a total of nine previous Olympic medalists who have won 17 medals (6x gold, 7x silver and 4x bronze medals) are on board – Among them ski jumpers Thomas Morgenstern (3x gold medals), Andreas Kofler (2x gold, 1x silver) and Gregor Schlierenzauer (1x gold, 2x bronze). The successful ski jumping team is joined by the biathlon relay team, winner of an Olympic silver medal, which is led by the two-time silver medalist Christoph Sumann. The women’s team representing the Austrian Ski Federation includes Nicole Hosp (1x silver), Elisabeth Görgl (2x bronze) along with Anna Fenninger and Michaela Kirchgasser. In addition, Janine Flock, a highly promising debutant who just won the European Skeleton Championship is also on board the flight operated by Austria’s domestic airline.

Peter Mennel, Secretary General of the Austrian Olympic Comité, Vienna Airport Management Board members Julian Jäger and Günther Ofner as well as Austrian Airlines’ Chief Commercial Officer Karsten Benz were personally at Vienna Airport this morning to send off the Olympic competitors. “We hope that our top-level service on board will lend wings to the Austrian athletes to achieve top performances”, says Austrian Airlines CCO Karsten Benz. “I wish the entire Austrian Olympic team much success and will keep my fingers crossed”, he adds.

Austrian Airlines is continuing its tried and tested partnership with the Austrian Olympic Comité, which goes back 21 years. The domestic airline is transporting approximately 900 people along with more than 200m³ or some 39 tons of equipment and material to the Olympic Games in Russia and back on a total of 15 non-stop flights. Since 1992, the domestic airline has served as the sponsor and partner of the Austrian Olympic Comité for both the Winter and Summer Olympic Games, and has safely and reliably flown Austria’s top athletes to Olympic destinations such as Albertville, Lillehammer, Barcelona, Sydney and Salt Lake City.
