Jersey: A new surf center opens in the heart of St Ouen’s Bay securing 12 jobs

2013-02-25 — /travelprnews.com/ — A new local surf company will operate from the Watersplash this spring, taking over the lease from the Jersey Surf School. The ‘Splash Surf Center’ will be managed by local waterman and surfer Chester Mackley, and will offer surfing lessons to groups, schools and individuals.

Mackley said;

‘I am really excited to be given the opportunity to run the surf school at the Watersplash – the iconic surf ‘shack’ has been part of Jersey surfing culture for decades and I’m stoked to be a part of that heritage. The Splash Surf Centre is part of our further commitment to adventure tourism in Jersey.

‘We want to create a place where people can come and enjoy the surf and share our passion for the ocean. As well as offering basic lessons, the Splash Surf Centre will offer coaching to more advanced surfers, including to those who want to compete locally and internationally.’

Roley McMichael, a former coach for the Channel Islands Team will assist in training and advanced surfing techniques. The Splash Surf Centre will employ 12 people, many of whom will be local surfers; there will also be opportunities for career development.

Arlene Maltman, President of the Jersey Surfboard Club said,

‘Chester and his team will bring another great offering to the Bay; we now have the choice of some superb surf schools providing quality instruction by well established and experienced surfers, many locals and tourists can benefit from these facilities.’

David Seymour, Managing Director of the Watersplash said,

‘ Chester’s experience and approach will be fantastic for all customers, from junior and school programmes, to families and novice surfers. Our team looks forward to welcoming him to the Watersplash this spring.’

Mackley, originally from South Africa, is the Managing Director of Absolute Adventures, which has grown into Jersey’s largest adventure facility offering extreme sports such as coasteering and blokarting in St Brelade’s Bay. The company joined together with Jerseyman Richard Stevens, to form Jersey Seafaris offering boat trips and charters around Jersey’s waters. This has been a great success story and the company is already well established as the number one tourist activity in Jersey on TripAdvisor.
