Mallorca, Spain, 2014-9-19 — /Travel PR News/ — 67 of the hotels operated by Meliá Hotels International in Spain, Germany, France, UK, Greece, Luxembourg, Portugal and Italy now form part of the TripAdvisor GreenLeaders programme in Europe thanks to their sustainable business practices (reusing sheets and towels, raising awareness, training, recycling, efficient use of resources, etc.)
Up to March, the GreenLeaders programme was only available in the United States, and distinguishes hotels that meet the Sustainability Policy standards set by TripAdvisor. In March 2014, Meliá Hotels International expressed its desire to take part in the programme given its alignment with the company Sustainability Strategy as a lever for creating value and an important factor in the differentiation of its hotels.
The programme evaluates the integrated approach of hotels to environmentally-friendly practices and classifies them based on different participation levels (bronze, silver, gold and platinum), displayed prominently on the hotel page on the TripAdvisor website.
Travellers will thus have more information about the Meliá hotels’ commitment to Sustainability within the TripAdvisor GreenLeaders programme. For Meliá, initiatives such as this are important tools for constant improvement in the day-to-day activities in its hotels and the impact they have on their environment. Being evaluated and certified by an independent third party gives greater credibility and transparency to the commitment and actions implemented by Meliá Hotels.
The Vice Chairman and CEO of Meliá Hotels International, Gabriel Escarrer, said that “thanks to the TripAdvisor GreenLeaders programme more than 260 million travellers all over the world can learn more about our commitment to sustainability and respect for the environment in our hotels. ”
The TripAdvisor GreenLeaders programme has been developed in collaboration with the United Nations Program for the Environment, the USA Green Building Council, The ENERGY STAR programme and the International Center for Responsible Tourism Canada, among other important environmental organizations.
